You want to hire great people. But what can you do to attract the best candidates? ZipRecruiter® CEO and cofounder Ian Siegel weighed in on job posting techniques that work, and they’re not what you think.
Read on to learn his four surprising ways to ensure your job post grabs the attention of top talent, based on ZipRecruiter internal research.
1. Keep job titles short. No, I mean really short
Ninety-nine percent of the time, the more generic you make the job title, the more candidates you attract: Graphic designer. Bartender. Software engineer. Dog walker. Cashier. Cheesemonger. All of these job titles say exactly what you’re hiring for — and the ideal length is 80 characters or fewer.
2. Always include salary information
The first question job seekers have is “how much does this job pay?” Yet half of employers don’t include salary information in their job posting. Jobs that include salary information not only get more traffic but also see a 25-percent increase in application rate. It doesn’t need to be precise — a range works just fine.
3. Embrace the phrase “Nice to Haves”
Most job postings include a section called “Requirements.” Many job seekers (and particularly women) disqualify themselves as a candidate if they are missing even one of those listed requirements. So don’t scare off great candidates — when you list the skills you seek, put them under “Nice to Haves” vs. “Requirements,” and you’ll attract more candidates to apply for your job.
4. Answer one question in the first paragraph
Next time you write a job post, challenge yourself to answer the question “Why would someone want to work here?” in the very first paragraph. Help potential candidates picture themselves working for you. Employers who show enthusiasm for their business and their employees attract enthusiastic candidates.
Is it your dog-friendly environment? Is the office close to shops and restaurants? Do you offer on-the-job training? Free food or a flexible schedule? You’re selling what it’s like to work at your company, so talk it up!
