Square for Retail Plans

Square for Retail is a full POS system designed for retail businesses, no matter the size or style. Square for Retail offers two plans: Square for Retail Free at no monthly cost and Square for Retail Plus at $60 per month, per location. See the table below for a comparison of features between the Square for Retail Free plan and the Plus plan.

If you’re interested in learning more about Square for Retail Plus features, sign up for a free 30-day trial. No payment information is required to get started. If you’ve signed up for a free trial and you wish to cancel the subscription, you will need to wait the full 30 days for the trial to complete.

If you already have Square for Retail, you can change your plan at any time in the Pricing & Subscriptions settings of your online Square Dashboard.

Afterpay and Square for Retail

Overview

With Square for Retail and Afterpay, customers can pay for transactions in four instalments over six weeks.

  • If you’re eligible, you can accept Afterpay payments between $1 to $2,000 in store via your Square for Retail POS app or via your Square Online website.
  • Afterpay is available with Square for Retail Free, Plus and Premium plans.

Afterpay Pricing

Square sellers using Afterpay get paid the full amount at the time of purchase, minus a processing fee on the total order. Enabling Afterpay with Square is free — there are no monthly fees or startup costs. There are no processing fees charged on the remaining instalments or if your customer makes a late payment.

Afterpay online and in-person payments are 6% + 30¢ (excl. GST) per sale.

Note: Afterpay rates are fixed and do not vary by subscription type, hardware, or custom pricing.

Enable or Disable Afterpay

You can go to Payment Methods via your online Square Dashboard to enable or disable Afterpay at any time.

Note: The setting for In-person payments with Afterpay is global and applies across all Square products that can also take Afterpay payments in-person. This includes other online platforms such as Square Point of Sale, Square Appointments, Square for Restaurants, Square Invoices and Virtual Terminal. There isn’t a way to enable/disable Afterpay only for Square for Retail at this time.

Square for Retail Plan FAQ

What is the Square for Retail Plus free trial and how do I start one?

Anyone who signs up or Square for Retail will automatically be enrolled in a 30-day free trial of Square for Retail Plus. This allows you to explore all the features you might need to run your business with Square for Retail. At the end of the trial, you can choose to subscribe to Square for Retail Plus to keep using advanced features, or you can downgrade to Square for Retail Free. You can also change your plan at any time by visiting Account & Settings > Business information > Pricing & Subscriptions in your online Square Dashboard.

Once you’ve signed up for Square for Retail, learn how to sell with the Square for Retail app.

Do I need to create a new account if I want to keep Square for Retail Free?

No. If you currently use Square for Retail Plus and would like to switch to the Free plan, you can downgrade by visiting Account & Settings > Business information > Pricing & Subscriptions in your online Square Dashboard. Next to Square for Retail, click Manage. From here, you can choose to downgrade to the Free version of Square for Retail.

My 30-day trial has ended but I want to use Square for Retail Plus. How do I subscribe?

If you use Square for Retail Free and need to upgrade to Square for Retail Plus, you can do so by visiting Account & Settings > Business information > Pricing & Subscriptions in your online Square Dashboard. Next to Square for Retail, click Manage. From here, you can choose to upgrade to Square for Retail Plus.

Will I lose any of my account information in the process of upgrading/downgrading?

Whether you upgrade/downgrade, your account will retain all information (e.g. items, inventory, settings, etc.) throughout the process. If you upgrade, the paid features will be ready to use once you’ve confirmed your payment method. If you downgrade, you will lose access to the paid features immediately, and will be billed a prorated amount for the time you used the Plus version.

Can I use my Square for Retail Free subscription with other products at Square?

Yes. Your Square for Retail Free subscription will work with other Square products, including Square Online, Team Management, Square Shifts, Square Loyalty, Gift Cards and Square Marketing.

How will I know if a feature is unavailable with Square for Retail Free?

You will still see all Square for Retail features in your online Square Dashboard, but the features available to Square for Retail Plus will be greyed out.

Is my business eligible for Square for Retail Premium?

Custom pricing available if you process more than $250K per year. To see if the Premium plan is available to you, contact our Sales Team to learn more.

Can I use Afterpay with all Square for Retail plans?

Yes! If you’re eligible to enable Afterpay, you can use Afterpay online and in-person on Square for Retail Point of Sale or on your Square Online website.
