Earn Extra Money with These Side Hustles for the School Year

Summer is a magical time, especially for college students who are on break.

However, it can also mean you’ve spent a lot of money hanging out with friends. With the school year approaching, it’s time to start thinking about what you can do to earn some money this upcoming school year — and perhaps get some education out of it as well.

If you don’t have time for a full-time job, finding the right side hustle can feel like a challenge. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back with this list of education-focused side hustles you can master this school year.

Even if you’re struggling in Psychology 202, don’t count yourself out of being a tutor. You can offer your tutoring services to earn money.

If you want to tutor other college students, create flyers and post them on bulletin boards around campus. Look online to see what other tutors with your experience charge to help you set your rate. Your school may also run a tutoring program for students. If so, reach out to your school and get paired with another student to tutor.

If you’re hoping to tutor local elementary or high school students, head online or to the local library to find students.

You can even teach English online, with sites such as VIP Kid. Don’t worry, you don’t have to know a foreign language; you just teach the English parts through interactive online courses. You can even pick your own hours.

Good, old-fashioned babysitting

The best part about being a college student is you can make your own schedule. Often, you can be done with classes by 2 or 3 p.m. This is just in time for pickup at elementary schools.

By offering your services as an afterschool caregiver to a local family near your college, you can earn some great extra money. You can help the kids finish their homework, play outside, and get paid.

Care.com and other online sites can help you match with a great family. On Care.com, you can set your rate, tout your college pedigree, and get matched with a family willing to pay in that range.

Help high school students with their college applications

It wasn’t too long ago that you were focused on college application essays. Spread the knowledge you gained to other high school students.

Reaching out to the local library and posting some flyers is a good place to start to find students in need.

Once you’re paired with a student, help them focus their essay topics. Then, proofread!

Freelance writing

If you excelled at English 101, you could be a freelance writer. Writing for blogs and other online publications can help you earn some extra cash.

You can find writing gigs on Craigslist, ProBlogger, and other sites. Some jobs can be one-off articles, but others can be long-term with regular deadlines.

Some college newspapers even pay you to be an editor.

Regardless of what you choose, there’s plenty out there to help you earn extra money while keeping it focused on education, which is sure to make mom and dad happy.
