Twenty-eight million Americans are entrepreneurs. That’s almost nine percent of the country’s population. And yet small businesses make up 99.9 percent of all businesses in the United States.
Entrepreneurs are an essential part of the U.S. economy. They are job creators, innovators, and community makers.
And they literally come from every community. Forty-five percent of businesses are owned by women. Twenty-eight percent of entrepreneurs are minorities, including 1.4 million LGBTQIA entrepreneurs. Immigrants and refugees are 22 percent more likely to own businesses than native-born citizens. American entrepreneurs include every ethnicity, nationality, and age.
We celebrate entrepreneurs every day. (Take a look at our video of Yassin, a small business owner and Syrian immigrant living in Knoxville, Tennessee.) So during National Small Business Week, we wanted to give you all a look at this incredible group of people who are building businesses from the ground up.
National Small Business is hosted by the Small Business Administration, which provides a multitude of resources to help you start and grow your business.
In addition to online resources, the SBA has 68 district offices and an extensive network of partners across the U.S. and its territories that can help with things like capital access, counseling, contracts, and disaster assistance.
Squares is celebrating National Small Business Week with events all across the country. In addition, we’ll be part of a Twitter chat with the SBA and SCORE on Tuesday, May 2 at 9:30am PT. Follow along with the hashtag #SmallBusinessWeek.
