Torch Pressed Sushi opened their first shop in North York, Ontario, in 2018 with the goal of sharing gourmet torched aburi-style sushi with a more cost-conscious audience. In 2019, the owners opened a second, takeout-focused location. With a goal of making sushi more accessible and approachable, the business needed to streamline operations and make ordering more efficient.
Finding a faster, more efficient way to manage orders
Torch Pressed Sushi was using an older POS system, and the customer support from the system wasn’t meeting their needs. On top of this, it was becoming time-consuming and difficult to handle incoming orders by phone. The team needed a better system to handle high-volume orders — and one that offered customers a sleek ordering experience and made it easy to instantly update their menu.
We moved to Square for lower credit card processing rates and the simplicity of the system and stayed for the customer service and the fact that everything we need for our restaurant is all in one platform. ”
Curtis Lau → CEO, Torch Pressed Sushi
Moving to a seamless ordering ecosystem
CEO Curtis Lau and his team chose to move over to Square for its simplicity and ease of use. Within three weeks the business was live with a new POS and online ordering.
“With Square, we now have hardware, payments, website ordering for customers, back-end dashboard management, gift cards, and coupons,” said Torch CEO Curtis Lau. “We also use Deliverect to pull our UberEats orders into our POS automatically. Having everything in one ecosystem makes everything so seamless. I can see how each store is doing compared to last week, 24/7. I can update the website, and staff can quickly enter dine-in orders and see table seating with Square for Restaurants.”
Saving time and money to help expand
With their all-in-one system, Torch now saves $120 per month in subscription fees. The Deliverect integration saves three to four hours per week by automatically entering delivery orders from third-party marketplaces into the POS with 100% accuracy.
“We’re opening a new concept called StuStu, and we plan to put that business on Square, too,” said Lau. “Square is built for multilocation restaurants. You can use the platform to grow with you over time.”
Torch Pressed Sushi’s path to success
The torch team can easily edit online menu items, view and download reports, and access customer data across both of their locations. Automated ordering and payments save staff members three to four hours each week. Their streamlined online ordering system and the lightning-fast Square POS dramatically cuts down on errors — making both customers and owners happy.
