Devices Compatible with Square Reader for Contactless and Chip

There are two generations of Square Reader: Square Reader for contactless and chip (1st generation) and Square Reader for contactless and chip (2nd generation). There are three versions within the first generation of Square Reader for contactless and chip , and one version in the newest second generation of Square Reader for contactless and chip .

Apple iOS Compatibility & Square Reader for Contactless and Chip

Square Reader for contactless and chip is supported on iOS devices with the following:

Most Apple iOS devices running the latest iOS version are compatible.

If you’re using Square Stand, you can connect the reader to your stand’s USB hardware hub to accept any payment type. Mobile devices not connected to Square Stand will connect wirelessly with the reader.

  • If all three USB ports on the hub are occupied by other hardware, you’ll need to free up a port to plug in the card reader, as Square doesn’t support third-party USB splitters.

  • Some iPads do not support iOS 15 and the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. We recommend upgrading your hardware to get the most of the Square app. If you are using iOS 14 or earlier, you will not be able to connect wirelessly with the card reader.

Google Android Compatibility & Square Reader for Contactless and Chip

Square Reader for contactless and chip is supported on most Android devices with the following:

  • Devices must be running Android 7 or higher.

  • Devices running an updated version of the Square app: Version 5 or higher for Android. Learn how to update your Square app.

  • Devices with built-in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

Note: Samsung Galaxy S9 is not compatible with Square Reader for contactless and chip (2nd generation).

We can’t guarantee support with all Android devices at the moment, but we’re working to support as many as possible. If your device isn’t currently on this list, there’s a chance it will be supported in the future.

If you have any problems with your reader, you can return it within 30 days.

If your Device Doesn’t Have a Headphone Jack

The Square Reader for contactless and chip pairs wirelessly to mobile devices via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). There is no need to use a headphone jack adapter with this reader.
