Best Practices For Your Welcome Email

First impressions are important -- especially over email.

Of all the email you can send your customer, a welcome email might just be the most valuable. Welcome email has an open rate of 41 percent for Square, so they’re well worth the little effort they take to write. Below, we review some best practices for making the most of welcome email.

Say thank you

Think of the email that you receive from brands. You’re most likely to be left with a warm and fuzzy feeling with the brands that make the extra effort. Your welcome email should ideally make your customers feel the same way.

It starts with a simple thank you. Thank your customers for their first purchase, and let them know that it’s just the beginning. You’re grateful for their business, and you should let them know as much. You could also give them some additional details about your business to encourage them to come back for more.

Start a conversation

Your very first email is also a great time to ask for feedback and start a conversation. Let customers know you’re listening from the get go, and that their opinion matters to you.

A welcome email is also a great time to set expectations about future marketing communications. Will you send something for their birthday? Keep them in the loop with new product offerings? Or let them know when your big annual sale is held? A brief heads up goes a long way and lets customers know that you care about them and their time.

Automate delivery

Just to be clear, personalizing email doesn’t mean that you have to write an individual email to every person that signs up for your email list (who has the time? We certainly don’t). You can automate your welcome email in Square Marketing. This means you can “set and forget” your welcome email.

Okay, who are we kidding? You’re a business owner –– a very busy business owner –– who doesn’t have the luxury of forgetting. But you do have the ability to use tools that will make your life a lot easier.

With Square Marketing you can set your welcome email up once and then let us take care of the rest. Simply go to the Campaign tab within Square Marketing and select Create Campaign –> Email. Then select Welcome New Customers under Automated Campaigns. This will let you automate and personalize your email.

Offer an incentive to come back

Now that you’re welcoming your customers, let’s give them a reason to visit your business in person. And what’s the easiest way to get them to come in? By offering them a coupon, of course.

And incentivizing customers to come in with a coupon will also boost sales. Customers spend 25 percent more on average on purchases with a coupon than without.

So remember, a successful welcome email will include: gratitude, conversation, automation, and making your customers an offer they can’t refuse.
