Devices That Are Compatible with Square’s Contactless and Chip Card Reader

The Square contactless and chip reader—which accepts both EMV and NFC payments— is our most technologically advanced device yet. It uses the latest version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), to connect wirelessly to your smartphone or tablet.

The Square contactless and chip reader is compatible with smartphones and tablets that have this version of Bluetooth built into them. Chances are if you’ve bought a new device in the last couple of years, it has the newer version of bluetooth. That’s because it works wonders for your battery life. (Which means you can do more transactions in more places without having to run back to a charger).

But just to make sure you’ll be all set up when your new reader arrives (it will begin shipping in waves this year), here’s a list of devices it’s compatible with:

Compatible Apple Devices

Most Apple devices running the latest version of iOS will work.

The new reader is compatible with these models:

Note: iPad 2 will not pair wirelessly with the Square for contactless and chip card reader. You must use a Square Stand to connect to the reader via USB.

The Square contactless and chip reader works with most Android devices, as long as you’re running Google Android 4.0 or higher, have location services enabled, and have access to Google Play.
