FAQ
How do contractors take payments with Square?
Square lets you accept card payments and mobile wallets on-site using Square hardware, or get paid remotely with invoices, payment links, or Virtual Terminal. Square supports all major card brands, and funds can be available as soon as the next business day.
Can I accept payments if I don't have internet access?
Yes. If you're working at a job site with limited or no internet connection, you can use ²Offline Payments with the Square Point of Sale app and compatible hardware to continue taking eligible card payments. Once your device reconnects to the internet, those payments are automatically processed.
This is particularly useful for contractors working on new builds, rural properties or other locations with unreliable mobile coverage.
Can I send estimates and convert them to invoices?
Yes. Create detailed estimates, add contracts when needed, and convert approved estimates into invoices in just a few clicks. You can also request deposits and send automatic payment reminders.
Does Square work for multi-location or multi-crew operations?
Yes. Manage multiple business locations, assign permissions to your team, and view sales activity across jobs and crews. Built-in analytics help you track performance from one dashboard.
What are the processing fees for contractors in Australia?
Square's standard processing rates are 1.6% for in-person payments, 2.2% for online payments, and 2.2% for manually entered card payments. ³There are no setup fees or long-term contracts required, and you can change plans as your business grows.
Do I need hardware to use Square contractor tools?
No. You can start by sending invoices, sharing payment links, or using Virtual Terminal from your computer or phone. If you take payments on-site, you can add hardware such as Square Reader, Terminal, Handheld, Stand, or Register whenever you're ready.

² Offline payments are processed automatically when you reconnect your device to the internet and will be declined if you do not reconnect to the internet within 24 hours of taking your first offline payment. By enabling offline payments, you are responsible for any expired, declined, or disputed payments accepted while offline. Square is unable to provide customer contact information for payments declined while offline. Offline payments are not supported on older versions of Square Reader for contactless and chip (1st generation, v1 and v2).
