Why You Should Ditch Your Receipt Printer and Go Paperless

Storing paper receipts can be a pain for your customers. Often they need to be retained for income tax purposes or to support warranty claims, but the fact that they come in different shapes and sizes makes filing a nightmare. There’s also a significant cost to businesses - the purchase of hardware and ongoing cost of paper receipt rolls is a serious dependency.

There’s also the environmental impact of receipts. In the US alone, over 940 million litres of oil and 10 million trees are consumed each year to create receipts, which is incredibly unsustainable.

At Square we’re big believers in encouraging Australian small businesses to go paperless whenever possible. This is why we’ve included email and SMS receipts as a free addition to the long list of special features in Square Point of Sale. Local sellers love email and SMS receipts, with local Melbourne moto-enthusiast and business owner Jimmy Goode of Kustom Kommune telling us that “Prior to using Square Point of Sale, we were running with old school hand-written receipts. Not only are transactions faster, but much more professional!”

Globally, Square sellers send over 10 million digital receipts to their customers every month. What’s more, Square’s digital receipts are packed with extra goodies and ways you can develop a one-to-one relationship with your customers. These include:

  • Links to your business website, Facebook or Twitter pages.

  • Square Feedback lets customers send feedback about their experiences (good or bad!) directly to your Square Dashboard.

  • Respond directly to customer feedback from your Square Dashboard to proactively address negative reviews before they’re posted on social media.

Get started on Square Point of Sale, which includes digital receipts as a free added feature. Help us get rid of paper receipts for good!
