Release notes

Single sign-on, nested modifiers, real-time check view, and more

Set up enterprise single sign-on (SSO) with Okta or Microsoft Entra ID

What changed: Team members sign in to Square with the company credentials they already use. The organisation connects its identity provider, Okta or Microsoft Entra ID, to Square through OpenID Connect (OIDC).

Why it matters: Organisations that use Okta or Microsoft Entra ID already manage staff logins there. Connecting Square means Square sign-in is secured through Okta or Entra ID along with the organisation's other staff logins.

Access: A Square Premium subscription and an Okta or Microsoft Entra ID account are required. Set up the OIDC connection in the identity provider, then in Dashboard go to Settings > Account & Settings > My business > Security.

Edit items with the check in view on Square Point of Sale

What changed: Item details open next to the bill, and the bill updates with each choice as staff edit. Edits save automatically. A tap on a bill item opens its details, and a long press opens bulk edit mode. Sellers choose which item detail sections appear: notes, fulfilment methods, taxes, discounts and service charges. Hiding a section changes only what staff see, not how taxes, discounts or service charges are calculated.

Why it matters: Item edits show up on the bill, which is where staff confirm them. Showing the bill next to item details, with only the sections a business uses, lets staff edit and confirm without switching screens.

Access: Real-Time Check View is on for food and beverage sellers on Point of Sale, with no setup required. It replaces the previous item details layout and can't be turned off. To show or hide item detail sections, open the order entry settings for a mode in Dashboard or in Point of Sale.

Nest modifier sets for follow-up choices

What changed: When a customer or cashier picks a modifier, only the choices that go with it appear next. Choosing a side salad, for example, brings up dressing options just for that salad. This means a single catalogue item can support up to three levels of choices.

Why it matters: A menu with many options can be a lot to work through. Showing fewer choices at each step keeps ordering quick and easy to follow.

Access: Nested modifier sets work on Point of Sale, Square Kiosk, Kitchen Display System (KDS), Ordering Profiles, DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats. They also work in third-party apps such as Fresh KDS and MarketMan, and through the Catalog API. In Dashboard, go to Items > Catalog and open an item. In the Modifiers section, select the three dots next to a modifier, then search for and select the modifier set to nest under it.

Choose the basket's side of the checkout screen on Point of Sale

What changed: Sellers choose whether the cart sits on the left or the right side of the checkout screen, depending on what works best for their setup. Each mode keeps its own choice, so Bar and Quick service, for example, can each have the cart on a different side.

Why it matters: A comfortable checkout layout can make repetitive tasks easier. Placing the cart on the left gives right-handed staff easier access to the item grid, while placing it on the right does the same for left-handed staff.

Access: In Square Point of Sale, go to More > Settings > Checkout > Cart and choose a side. The setting is available in Quick service, Full service, Bar and Drive-thru modes.

See open bills in the Sales report on Square Point of Sale

What changed: The report counts sales on bills that haven't closed yet alongside completed sales. Open bills are included by default, and a banner on the report confirms this.

Why it matters: Sales on open bills are part of the day's business before anyone settles them. Counting them shows the day's sales so far without waiting for bills to close.

Access: In Square Point of Sale, open the Sales report. To show only completed sales, turn off the Open Bills filter.
