Get Started with Square Online

With Square Online, you can create a professional website to showcase your business online, sell your items, share blog-style Stories, and accept payments with Square. With our easy-to-use website builder, spend less time setting up Square Online, and more time focusing on what matters most: your business.

If you need to start processing payments right away, you can skip account verification, and complete it later with provisional activation.

To sell individual items without setting up an entire ecommerce website with Square Online, consider Square Online Checkout links. Checkout links allow you to sell items through email, social media, or your blog.

Get Started

If you’ve already signed up for Square, you can get started with Square Online right from your online Square Dashboard by following the directions below:

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, select Online.

  2. Select Get Started.

  3. Choose to either set up a single online ordering page, or a multi-page ecommerce website.

  4. Choose your business type (i.e. what are you selling?), select your preferred order fulfillment method(s) (e.g. shipping, pickup, or delivery), and set up other features based on your business needs.

Square Online is a robust platform that covers your website, the items you sell online, online order fulfillment, and much more. You can even purchase a new domain name from Square, and set up an email address based on that domain.

Sell, Manage Orders, and Accept Payments Online

When you complete initial setup, you can start setting up your website to begin selling online, managing online orders with Square, accepting payments, and sharing your business with others. Learn more details below.

Syncing between Square and Square Online

When you first set up Square Online, things like products in your Square Item Library will sync over to your Square Online Overview page. After the initial setup, syncing will continue automatically in the background.

Items in Square Online

Items synced to Square Online can be changed to 7 different item types, so feel free to choose an item type that fits your purpose. We help you by providing specific fields and layouts perfectly suited for each item type. Below are the 7 item types found in Square Online:

  • Physical: Best for basic retail items such as clothing or jewelry.

  • Digital: Lets you provide a digital file for download.

  • Donation: Allow site visitors to send donations for any cause.

  • Membership: Collect membership dues and registration fees. Great for clubs and classes.

  • Event: Sell tickets to events, and include location address and times.

  • Service: Best for services for hire, such as massages and hair styling.

  • Prepared food and beverage: Best for restaurants and other food venues. Learn more about selling food online.

These items can also be organized with categories to make shopping online even easier for your buyers. Learn more about adding items and categories to Square Online.

Add shipping, pickup, and delivery

Depending on your item types in Square Online, you can set up different fulfillment methods for different item types. Learn more about each fulfillment method below.

Note: Fulfillment type for all items will default to shipping unless otherwise changed in settings.

Manage orders

You can manage orders from both your online Square Dashboard and the Square POS app. You can also understand the different statuses for online orders, and manage online orders from your Square Online Overview page.

Payments and reporting

Once a customer places an order from your Square Online site, Square automatically collects payment before you mark the order as complete. Your customers will receive an email confirmation with their Square Online receipt once they’ve finished the payment flow. Payments processed with Square Online will appear in the transaction history on your online Square Dashboard. Your payment history on your Dashboard offers an itemized breakdown of stock sold for both in-store and online sales. Learn more about viewing and downloading your Square payment history online.

If you cancel an item or order, your customer will automatically be refunded. Canceled orders will reflect as a custom amount refund, and will not update your inventory levels for the included items. Learn more about how to process refunds with Square.

Square Online Fees

Building a site via Square Online is a free service. You can sell unlimited products online, and fulfill your orders electronically via pickup, delivery, or shipping - all without a subscription fee.

You pay only the transaction fee on the orders you receive. When a customer places an order online, you’ll pay a 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction fee for most Square Online hosting plans. You can reduce that fee to 2.6% + $0.30 per transaction by upgrading your site to the Premium Plan.

You can also host your site with a free Square subdomain (e.g. Learn how to use a free subdomain with Square Online.

There are only charges if you want to purchase your own custom domain name, or an enhanced service plan. Otherwise, basic service is, and always will be, 100% free and feature-packed.

If you are prompted to pay, it is either because you tried registering a new domain name, or you tried using a feature that is part of one of the paid service plans. All upgrades and custom domains are optional.

Manage Your Square Online Subscriptions and Services

If you sign up for one of the paid-tier versions of Square Online, or purchase a domain or email address, you can manage your subscriptions and services for Square Online directly from the Account settings area of your Square Online Overview page.

Note: To manage your account settings for your primary Square account, go back to your online Square Dashboard > Account & Settings. The Account settings area of your Square Online Overview page is for Square Online only, and does not affect your main Square account, or other Square products.

Square Online Domains

A domain, often known as a URL or site address, is what helps users find your website while browsing the internet. If you think of your website as a house, then a domain is the house's address. Once you have a domain, there are several ways to get your domain associated with your website. We even offer a free option.

To purchase and register a brand new domain name here at Square:

  1. Go to the Domain area of your Square Online Overview page.

  2. Select Register.

  3. Enter the domain name you want into the search box to start the purchase process.

Square Online Email Addresses

Square partners with Google to provide a complete email solution for domain names known as G Suite. When you have a domain name associated with your website, you can create an email address right from your Square Online Overview page based on that domain.

Once you have your domain set up with Square Online, set up your email address by following the directions below:

  1. Go to the G Suite area of your Square Online Overview page.

  2. Enter the username you want for your email address, and use the dropdown menu to choose the domain you’d like to use.

  3. Create a password, and select the button to begin your trial.

Use Square Online with Your Existing Website

If you have a primary website and would like to add Square Online to it, you can, for instance, build a single ordering page where your buyers can shop your entire catalogue of products only. Once built, you can then add a link to your Square Online single ordering page to your primary website’s navigation menu.

To build a single ordering page, select Single ordering page when you first sign up for Square Online, or follow these steps:

  1. From your Square Online Overview page, go to Website > Edit site.

  2. In the Square Online site editor, click the Page dropdown menu in the upper left.

  3. Under Category pages > Shop All, select ”…” > Make this my homepage.

  4. Delete all other pages by selecting ”…” > Delete page.

  5. Under Category pages, select ”…” > Switch template.

  6. Review your options and select Switch. Your options for switching your single ordering page template are Shop All (best for selling retail items), and Order Online (best for selling food for pickup).

  7. Finish setting up your single ordering page.

  8. Publish your site to a domain (URL), and add that domain as a link in your primary website.

Square Online and Other Square Products

With Square Online's robust tools, it can integrate directly or be used with several other Square products. Learn more details on how below.

Square Appointments

With Square Online, you can create a professional website to offer a seamless way to receive appointment bookings. If you already have a Square Appointments subscription, you can add a navigation link to your site that will automatically link to your Square Appointments calendar, making it easier for customers to book services with you. To get started, please follow the directions below:

  1. In the Square Online site editor where you see your site, select your navigation menu.
  2. Select Navigation > Navigation links. You’ll see a list of all items currently in your navigation menu.
  3. Select +Add navigation link, and choose Square Appointments from the dropdown menu. Select your location, and enter a name to be displayed in the navigation menu.
  4. When finished, select Save.
  5. Publish your site to see the changes live.

Square Gift Cards

Using Square Gift Cards for Square Online lets your customers redeem gift cards when shopping on your website or in person. If you haven’t already enabled gift cards and added them to your site, please follow the directions below:

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, go to Gift Cards > eGift Cards > Configure.
  2. Toggle on the switch next to Sell eGift Cards Online, then select Save.
  3. From your Square Online Overview page, go to Items > Gift Cards. If you have multiple sites, go to Settings > Gift Cards.
  4. Check the box for Add link to gift card purchase page to site navigation.

From your Square Online site editor, you can also set up or sync your Square eGift Cards by selecting + Add > Page > Gift Cards. You’ll then be prompted to sync your existing Square Gift Cards account, or set one up.

Square Invoices

If you already use Square Invoices and Square Online, you can use a contact form on a Square Online website to allow your buyers to contact you, and request custom quotes for the services they would pay for with your invoices.

To add a contact form for custom quotes to your Square Online site:

  1. Go to your Square Online site editor, and select +Add > Section.
  2. Under Communicate, select Forms, and choose the template for custom quotes.
  3. To add more fields to the form, select the form in the editor, and select +Add a question in the menu.
  4. Adjust other aspects of the form using the menu, and Publish the site to see the changes live.

Note: Data submitted via the contact form is not secure. Please do not request or collect any sensitive personal information with contact forms.

Square Loyalty

With Square Loyalty, you can create a digital loyalty rewards program that will keep your customers coming back again and again – all with incentives they can earn with each purchase.

For Square Online, points can be earned or redeemed by loyalty program members if they are completing a transaction on your website. The buyer will need to enter in their phone number, and any rewards they decide to use for their purchase will be automatically applied. The rewards used for the transaction will also appear on their digital receipt.

To get started with Loyalty, please follow the directions below:

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, go to Loyalty.
  2. Follow the steps to create your Loyalty Program.
  3. Ensure that Loyalty is enabled for your location(s) being used by Square Online.

Note: Below are some limitations to consider when using Square Loyalty via Square Online:

  • Category based rewards cannot be redeemed in Square Online, but item based rewards can.
  • When customers enroll in Loyalty via Square Online, customers will not receive SMS notifications, or get sent their Loyalty Status, until they’ve made a purchase through Square POS.
  • Customers are still able to redeem their Loyalty rewards even if your business is unsubscribed from Square Loyalty.

Square Marketing

It’s easy to create a marketing campaign for your customers with a coupon for Square Online. First create a coupon for Square Online, then follow the steps below:

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, go to Marketing.
  2. Select Offer A Coupon > Design Campaign.
  3. Select Unique auto-generated code on the image of the coupon in the campaign preview.
  4. Select Online use, and under Coupon Code, input the Square Online coupon code you created back in the Square Online Overview page.
  5. Fill in the rest of the details of your coupon just as you did in your Square Online Overview page. Note: Coupon details do not sync between this area of your online Square dashboard, and the coupon area of your Square Online Overview page. If you need to edit any details of your coupon, please visit your Square Online Overview page > Items > Coupons. If you have multiple sites, go to Settings > Coupons.
  6. Once you’ve finished setting up your coupon marketing campaign, select Select Audience.
  7. Select your coupon campaign audience. You can also choose to share your campaign on Facebook with free posts, or paid advertising to expand your audience.

Once you launch your campaign, customers will receive an email with your Square Online coupon code, which is only redeemable online.

Square Online Checkout links

Square Online does not have a native subscription feature for items on your website, but you can use Square Online Checkout links to create a subscription item for a service or donation, and then add it to your website with a few available methods.

To set up subscription payments on Square Online with Square Online Checkout links:

  1. Go to your online Square Dashboard, and select Online Checkout.
  2. Select Create checkout link.
  3. Choose the type of link you want to create. The Collect a payment option is best for services, and the Accept a donation option is best for collecting recurring donations. These are the only options that allow you to create a subscription. Select Continue when you’ve made your choice.
  4. Enter a name and description for your link, and toggle on Accept recurring payments/donations.
  5. Choose the billing period from the dropdown menu (e.g. weekly, monthly, etc.).
  6. When finished, select Create link.
  7. Add your new checkout link to your website in the Square Online site editor.

You can add the checkout link to Square Online by either creating a link on your site (copy and save the checkout link’s URL by selecting Copy link), or embedding the link onto your site (copy and save the embed code by selecting Copy under Website button code). Both of these options can be done in the Square Online site editor.

Note: Remember that you can enable Square Online Checkout links to allow your customers to purchase from an item checkout page without creating a full, ecommerce website with Square Online. Learn more about Square Online Checkout links.

Square for Restaurants

If you’re a restaurant or food vendor business, and are ready to bring your business online, then Square Online is a great way to get started.

Square for Retail

If you’re a retail business selling items such as clothing, electronics, or home goods, and are ready to bring your business online, then Square Online is a great way to get started.
