Group ordering, reporting updates, and Android barcode scanning

See all refunds and compare matching timeframes in the Sales Report.

What changed: The Sales Report now shows both itemized returns and by-amount refunds in the Sales Summary overview, with the same terminology on iOS and Android. Period-over-period comparisons on Android measure matching timeframes, and the date-range selector works when starting from a preset.

Why it matters: An owner checking Tuesday against last Tuesday gets a true side-by-side comparison, and refunds read the same on every device — so decisions come from data that matches.

Access: On Square Point of Sale, go to More > Reports > Sales Report.

Custom sounds and volume control for Kitchen Display System alerts

What changed: Sellers choose any notification sound available on the device as the new-ticket alert on Kitchen Display System (KDS) — not just the single built-in tone. A sound picker with preview and a device volume slider allow sellers to audition options and adjust loudness without leaving the app or navigating through device system settings.

Why it matters: A kitchen running a busy dinner service is loud — hoods, fryers, callouts. An alert that blends into the noise means a ticket sits unread and an order waits. Sellers pick a longer, louder, or more distinctive sound and crank the volume from one screen, even on wall-mounted displays that lack physical volume buttons.

Access: Available to all sellers using KDS. The new controls appear automatically in the display's settings under Timers & alerts > Device sounds.

Customizable background colours for modifier tiles on Square Point of Sale

What changed: Sellers assign custom background colours to individual modifiers, making them easier to distinguish on the Point of Sale screen.

Why it matters: A coffee shop with a long list of milk modifiers — oat, almond, whole, skim, coconut — can colour-code each one so staff identify the right option at a glance during a morning rush instead of reading every label.

Access: In Dashboard, go to Items & Services > Items > Modifiers, select a modifier set, and choose Customize next to the modifier. Both Kitchen Display System and Point of Sale colours are set from the same screen.

Enter custom amounts from a Keypad tab in real-time check view

What changed: Sellers using real-time check view have a Keypad tab to the left of the menu in the Menu applet. From the keypad, sellers enter a custom amount, add an optional note, and add it directly to the open check — no catalogue item required. Together with Quantity Bar, this restores the core quantity and custom-amount entry previously available through the calculator.

Why it matters: A caterer rings up a last-minute linen rental that isn't in the catalogue, or a bar charges a breakage fee mid-service. Previously, adding that charge in real-time check view meant creating a throwaway catalogue item or leaving the check to use another workflow. The Keypad tab keeps custom charges one tap from the menu and the open check, so the transaction closes without interrupting the line.

Access: The Keypad tab appears by default for all sellers using real-time check view on Square Point of Sale. It requires no additional setup and it's visible to the left of the menu in the Menu applet.

Option to show dine-in fulfillment in the Square Point of Sale cart

What changed: Sellers using Full Service, Quick Service, Bar, or Drive-Thru modes on Square Point of Sale control whether the dine-in fulfillment row appears in the checkout cart. A per-mode setting keeps the fulfillment method visible on every order rather than hiding it automatically. Quick Service and Drive-Thru modes have the setting enabled by default.

Why it matters: A quick-service counter that handles both dine-in and to-go orders needs staff to see the fulfillment type at a glance — especially when item-level fulfillment methods differ from the order-level selection. Previously, Point of Sale hid the dine-in row in the cart to reduce clutter for restaurants who primarily take dine-in orders, which left some restaurants without a clear indicator of how the order should be fulfilled. Keeping it visible removes that guesswork during a lunch rush.

Access: From Point of Sale in Full Service, Quick Service, Bar, or Drive-Thru mode, go to More > Checkout > Cart and turn on Show dine-in fulfillment in cart.

Preset tip percentages on invoice payments

What changed: Sellers set preset tip percentage buttons that appear when customers pay an invoice on the web. Customers select a preset amount or enter a custom tip.

Why it matters: Service providers send an invoice after each appointment. Previously, customers who wanted to tip had to type in a dollar amount manually. Preset percentage buttons let customers add a tip in one click, removing a step that often meant no tip was added at all.

Access: In Dashboard or Point of Sale, go to Settings > Invoices > Invoice tipping to choose preset percentages.

Scan barcodes with the built-in camera on Android devices

What changed: Sellers activate the built-in camera on their Android device as a barcode scanner by pressing the volume key. The camera scans barcodes for adding items to the cart, creating new catalogue items, and editing existing ones — no additional hardware required.

Why it matters: Not every retailer has a separate barcode scanner at the counter. A shop owner receiving a shipment of new products can scan each barcode with the device already in hand to build out catalogue entries on the spot, without purchasing extra equipment.

Access: To enable, go to More > Settings > Hardware > Camera Barcode Scanner and turn the feature on.

Select item quantity before adding to a check in real-time check view

What changed: Sellers using real-time check view select the quantity of an item before adding it to the check. For configurable items — those with nested modifiers — the selected quantity carries through the entire modifier selection and applies when the item is added. Items that don't require configuration are added directly with the selected quantity. The quantity bar replaces the calculator previously available in real-time check view.

Why it matters: A barista ringing up four identical lattes with oat milk previously had to tap through the same modifier screens four separate times. Selecting the quantity first means one pass through configuration adds all four, cutting repeated taps and keeping the line moving during a morning rush.

Access: The quantity bar is available in real-time check view on Square Point of Sale on iOS and Android. It is off by default but turns on automatically for sellers who previously used the calculator in real-time check view, preserving their existing quantity-entry workflow.

Take group orders on Point of Sale

What changed: Sellers take orders from multiple guests in the same group and send a single consolidated ticket to the kitchen, while each guest still pays separately. As guests add items, everything groups under one order. When the order goes to the kitchen, the team receives one merged ticket per group instead of a separate ticket for every guest. At payment time, each guest settles their own portion independently.

Why it matters: A pub seating a party of eight during a rush previously meant juggling separate orders or asking the kitchen to piece together which items belong to which group — slow and error-prone when tickets pile up. Group ordering keeps the front-of-house flexibility guests expect, like separate bills and individual modifications, without fragmenting the kitchen workflow. The kitchen sees the table the way they actually plate it: as one order.

Access: Available to sellers on Plus plans and above. To enable, go to Settings > Checkout > Group Order and turn on Show group order option in cart.

Troubleshoot unrecognised scales and scanner-scales from Hardware Hub

What changed: Sellers see an error message in Hardware Hub when a scale or scanner-scale cable is connected but Point of Sale cannot fully recognize the device. The message includes troubleshooting steps to resolve the connectivity issue.

Why it matters: A grocery or bulk-goods seller plugs in a scale and gets no reading. Without a visible error, the next step is guesswork — swapping cables, restarting the device, or calling support. An error message with guidance makes the problem visible and provides a path to resolution.

Access: The error message appears automatically in Hardware Hub within Point of Sale when a scale or scanner-scale cable is connected but the device is not fully recognized.
