Print Order Tickets
Connect a printer to your device to print in-person or online order tickets and order ticket stubs for customers. You can also send order tickets to your kitchen.
In-person or online order tickets will show all the details of an order (e.g. a salad item will list that it includes extra squash, extra tomato, extra dressing, and no spinach). Order ticket stubs will simply show that 1 salad is being ordered (with no details about what's included in the salad).
If you accept pickup orders with the Square app on iPads or Android devices you can also automatically print remote order tickets. Note: Printing remote order tickets on iPhones is not available at this time.
Enable Order Tickets and Order Ticket Stubs
Before you enable Order Tickets, learn how to connect a printer to the following compatible devices:
Note: For printing orders in a kitchen, we recommend the Star SP742ML impact printer, which is designed to handle the high-heat environment of a kitchen, and supports printing in both black and red. Impact printers don’t print receipts, only order tickets.
Order tickets will automatically print after every sale, even if a customer receipt isn’t printed. On Square Terminal, you’ll have to tap the Print Receipts button after the transaction is completed to print order tickets from the built-in Square Terminal printer.
To enable In-person order tickets, Online order tickets and Order ticket stubs from the Square POS app:
Tap ≡ More > Settings > Hardware > Printers.
Tap Create printer station, then set up your printer by setting up the printer name and selecting the printer model.
Under "Use this printer for":
Tap In-person order tickets, then toggle on Use printer for in-person order tickets to allow the printer to print order tickets placed in-person.
Tap Online order tickets, then toggle on Use this printer for online order tickets to allow the printer to print order tickets placed online.
Tap Order ticket stubs, then toggle on Use this printer for order ticket stubs to give customers a numbered stub for their order. Note: Order ticket stubs are only printer after an in-person order ticket is printed.
With Square Register you can enable your device to automatically print new incoming orders. To do so:
Tap ≡ More > Settings > Hardware > Printers.
Select your printer from the list and toggle on Online order tickets.
Toggle on Use this printer for online order tickets.
From here, you can choose to print a single item per ticket, compact tickets, automatically print new orders, and select order categories to print.
Once the feature is enabled, new orders will automatically print from your supported printing device. You’re able to differentiate between new and existing orders as new orders will be highlighted grey in the Orders section of your online Square Dashboard and on your Point of Sale app.
Important to note
If you are using Square Terminal, you’ll only be able to enable Order Tickets and Order Ticket Stubs. All other receipt types will print directly from Square Terminal’s built-in printer.
Transactions using a magstripe card or insert a chip card will automatically populate customer names on kitchen tickets if you’ve opted to manually enter text on tickets vs auto assign numbers. This will keep your lines moving quickly, as you won’t have to manually add names to order tickets.
Reprint Order Tickets
You can reprint an order ticket from current cart, Transactions tab, or open ticket list.
To reprint an order from the current cart:
Tap the down arrow in the top right.

Printing to Multiple Printers
If you’re using multiple printers, you can also send specific items to a selected printer. For example, send drink orders directly to the printer located at your bar. When configuring your printers, make sure to select which item categories will print for each one.
To do so:

Tap Settings > Checkout > Order Tickets > select your desired printer.

Printing Single Items per Order Ticket
With the Square Point of Sale app on your iOS device, you can assign item categories to different printer stations, and print a single item per order ticket. This is useful if you need to send specific items to different prep stations or service counters to fulfill orders.
To get started, be sure to assign your items to specific categories. Once complete, you can assign categories to print at each station. To do so:
From the Square app, tap More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.
Tap Settings > Hardware > Printers.
Under Use this printer for, navigate to either “In-Person Order Tickets” or Online Order Tickets, and toggle on Use this printer for in-person order tickets or Use this printer for online order tickets respectively.
Toggle on Single Item Per Ticket on if you want to print a single item per ticket. This is useful if you need to send specific items to different prep stations or service counters to fulfill orders.
Select the category(s) you’d like to print at this printer station. Single item printing will only apply to the categories you select.
Repeat these steps for each of your printer stations.
Note: Android, Square Terminal and Register do not currently support single item per ticket printing at this time.
You can also print single items per order ticket with orders received from your Square Online site. Check out more on printing and managing online orders.
Group Items on Order Tickets
To customize your item grouping settings:
On Square for Restaurants, the Square Point of Sale app, or Square for Retail, go to Settings > Hardware > Printer Settings. Scroll down to In Person Orders. On Square KDS, go to your Square Dashboard and select Devices > Kitchen Settings.
Toggle on Combine identical items. Items with the same details will then be automatically combined into one line item.
If you toggle on Single item per ticket, this setting overrides grouping items and automatically prints each item, ungrouped, on its own ticket.
Note: Combine identical items is off by default for existing printer stations but will turn on by default for all new printer stations you create. Learn more about grouping items.
