Learn About Square Fees

Square has simple and transparent pricing. Our best-in-class point-of-sale software is completely free and you'll always pay one low rate per card payment, so you can keep more of what you make. Square’s processing fees are deducted before funds are transferred to your linked bank account.

Square Fees by Payment Type

Square processing fees are deducted before funds are transferred to your linked bank account. Here are the payment types you can accept with Square and the associated fees on the total transaction amount:

*The higher fee for manually entered transactions is due to a greater risk involved with these payments, as neither the payment card nor the cardholder needs to be present for the payment to occur.

Square Invoice Fees

Square Invoices processing fees are deducted before funds are transferred to your linked bank account. With Square Invoices you are able to accept payments via a number of different methods that have different processing rates. The below table outlines what fees are associated with each payment type on the total transaction amount:

Afterpay Fees

Square sellers using Afterpay get paid the full amount at the time of purchase, minus a processing fee on the total order. Enabling Afterpay with Square is free — there are no monthly fees or startup costs. You only pay when you make a sale. There are no processing fees charged on the remaining installments or if your customer makes a late payment.

Gift Card Fees

With Square Gift Cards you will pay a 2.5% load fee of the total amount loaded on to the gift card whenever you load or reload a physical gift card or digital eGift card online or in store. There are no additional fees to redeem Square Gift Cards. 

For digital eGift cards you will pay a credit card-not-present processing fee of 2.9% + $.30 for cards sold online through your Square eGift Card order site. If you sell your eGift cards through the Square app, you’ll pay the credit card processing rate based on our standard card processing rates.

  • There are no fees for:

    • Chargebacks and Dispute management

    • Square Support

    • Advanced reporting tools

    • Account inactivity

    • PCI compliance coverage

    • Account takeover protection

    • End-to-end encrypted payments

    • Active fraud prevention

    • Next-business-day transfers

    • Free Square Reader for magstripe

    • Early termination

    • Processing refunds

  • Credit card fees are included in Square’s fees, so there are no charges from credit card companies.

  • Every card brand accepted has the same rate.

  • Payment processing fees are taken out of the total amount of each transaction, including tax and tip.

  • Square’s fees apply to all business types, including non-profit organizations.

Custom Rates on Processing Fees

If your annual sales exceed $250,000 and have an average ticket size of over $15, contact sales.

View Your Fees

You can view monthly tax invoices and processing rates at any time from your online Square Dashboard:

  1. Go to Account & Settings > Business information > Tax forms.

  2. Click on the reporting location and month, then click Download to download a PDF.

Note:

  • Processing fees are charged per transaction and deducted before each transfer. Fees cannot be charged on a monthly basis.

View Fees Paid Per Transfer

From your Square POS app

  1. Tap ≡ More > Balance.
  2. Tap View all activity > select a transfer. Note: Fees for the sales included in that transfer are listed under Estimated Fees.

From your online Square Dashboard

  1. Go to View all transfers.
  2. Select a date range from the date selector tool.
  3. Select a transfer from the list for an overview of the total fees paid.
  4. To view fees associated with each transaction in your selected transfer date range, click Export.

View Fees for a Period of Time

From your Square Point of Sale app

  1. Tap ≡ More > Reports.
  2. Tap Sales > select a predefined date range or tap the date to set a custom range.
  3. Tap Done.
  4. Scroll to the “Fees” line of the sales summary report.

From your online Square Dashboard

  1. From the main menu, go to Reports.
  2. Click Sales Summary > select a date range from the date selector tool.
  3. Fees paid for this period of time will be displayed in the Payments row of the report.

View Fees for a Single Payment

From your online Square Dashboard

  1. Go to Reporting > Transactions.
  2. Select a date range and apply any desired filters.
  3. Select a transaction. The fee paid for the transaction will be displayed in the Fees column.

View Fees reports

You can easily download a PDF file of various fees (such as card processing fees, instant transfer fees, and application fees), taxes on fees, and the cost of taking payments with Square. To download your fees report:

  1. Log in to your online Square Dashboard and click Reporting > Reports.
  2. Click Fees.
  3. Select a month and the desired columns.
  4. Click the Print button to print or Save as a PDF file.

Free Processing Credit or Discounted Hardware

When you invite businesses to join Square, you can both benefit from Square referral program. For each business that activates their account through your unique referral link, you can choose to receive reimbursements on processing fees up to $1,000 in sales over the next 180 days (six months) or $20 off the purchase of a Square Reader for contactless and chip from Square Shop. Upon activation, your friends can also receive free processing fees on up to $1,000 in transactions or a discounted hardware purchase.
