About Square’s referral program
When you invite friends to join Square you both benefit from rewards, including credits on processing fees of up to $1,000 in sales over the next 180 days (6 months) or $20 off the purchase of a Square Reader for contactless and chip in Square Shop.
Your referrals are displayed with their status in Square Dashboard:
Waiting for sign up: The referred business hasn’t completed setup their Square account.
Waiting for first payment: The referred business has an active Square account, but hasn’t processed their first minimum credit card payment of $1 using your referral link.
Complete: The referred business has signed up with Square and accepted their first payment, and you are eligible for a referral reward.
Before you begin
Note the following details regarding Square’s referral program:
To receive a referral reward, the referred sellers must be new to Square when they activate their account and they must process a minimum credit card payment of $1 using your referral link.
For new businesses that sign up for Square with a referral link and do not choose a reward after processing their first payment, the free processing credit will automatically be applied to their account.
Referrals can only be made within the same country of your business. International free processing is not available at this time.
If you refer more than one business to Square, you will not be able to combine your $20 off redemption code for the Square Reader for contactless and chip. You can only apply one discount code per order.
Redemption codes for $20 off can only be used once.
Processing fees are reimbursed to your account on each transfer. Once you process $1,000 of payments or 180 calendar days have passed, your standard pricing will apply.
Share your referral link
You can share your link directly from your Square Point of Sale app or Square Dashboard.
- Log in to your Point of Sale app and tap ≡ More.
- Select Referrals > Send referral.
- You can either enter in the email address of the person you wish to refer, share referrals in person via a QR code, or copy your referral link to share via SMS, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, or elsewhere.
- Tap Done once you’re finished to send another referral.
- Log in to your Square Dashboard and select Account & settings.
- Click Get free processing to view your referral link.
- Share your referral link on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and other social media platforms, or copy and paste it into a text message or email.
Customize your referral link
Create a custom referral link from your Square Dashboard that’s easy to remember and on-brand with your business.
Log in to your Square Dashboard and select Account & settings.
Click Get free processing to view your referral link.
Select Customize next to your referral code and enter a custom 10-character code. Your custom code must be 10 characters.
Click Save.
Creating a custom referral link will invalidate any prior referral links associated with your account. If you update your referral link, share the new referral link moving forward.
Add a referral link to receipts and invoices
- Log in to your Square Dashboard and select Account & settings.
- Click Get free processing to view your referral link.
- Toggle on Add your referral link to Square Receipts > Save.
- Log in to your Square Dashboard and select Invoices > Settings > Invoices.
- In the Get free processing section, toggle on Show referral banner on invoice and estimate receipts.
View your referral status
You can see which rewards are available from your Square Dashboard or from the Square POS app. You can also track the status of your referral, nudge referred sellers to sign up by resending their invitation, and see whether they’ve taken their first payment.
- Log in to your POS app and tap ≡ More > Referrals.
- View your referral status from the Referral activity section.
- Log in to your Square Dashboard and select Account & settings.
- Click Get free processing > Referral activity to view your referral status.
Select a reward
After a business you refer creates a Square account using your referral code and processes their first payment, you’ll be notified to select a reward via email, from your Square POS app, or from your Square Dashboard. To select a reward:
Log in to your Square Dashboard and select Account & settings > Get free processing.
From the Current offers section, select Claim to get your referral reward.
Note: If a reward is not selected 30 days after a new seller activates their account using your referral code and processes their first payment, a credit on processing fees will automatically apply to your account.
Track free processing
While your free processing offer is active, after each payment you’ll automatically receive a credit to your Square balance for transaction fees. Reimbursements will be grouped with your next transfer. To view your free processing reimbursements:
Log in to your Square Dashboard and select Balance.
Use the date selector tool to select a custom date range.
Select a transfer from the list to view your free processing credits included in that day’s transfer.
If you process a refund, Square will first look to your Square balance to cover the refund, including any associated fee reimbursements. If there are insufficient funds in your Square balance, your linked bank account will be debited.
