Accept Payments with Cash App Pay

Customers can complete their payments on your Square Point of Sale app or Square Online site using Cash App.

Paying with Cash App simplifies in-person contactless transactions at your POS, providing your customers an alternative payment method to complete their purchases and helping your business avoid the need to process card-not-present transactions. During the checkout process at your POS, you can choose Cash App Pay as the customer’s payment method to generate a unique QR code on your device screen. They then scan the code from their mobile device using Cash App to make their payment.

Online payments with Cash App are also simplified. Customers on the desktop version of your Square Online site will scan a QR code in the same way they would at your Square POS. If your customer is buying from your mobile site and has Cash App installed, they'll simply tap a Cash App button during checkout to start paying.

Note: Cash App Pay is currently available for businesses processing payments on Square Register, Square Stand, Square Terminal, Square Online, Square Appointments , Square for Retail, Square Invoices, and the Square Point of Sale app for iOS and Android devices. Paying with Cash App is not available through Square for Restaurants at this time.

Refunds

Disputes

Just like other types of payment disputes, buyers can file disputes for Cash App payments for two types of reasons:

  • Fraud: The buyer claims that they never participated in the transaction and that their account or card was stolen and used by a fraudster. Sellers who receive a fraud dispute from Cash App Pay are covered entirely by Cash App and owe no money for the dispute. They don't have to take any action to receive this coverage; however, this coverage doesn't apply to any other payment methods.

  • Non-fraud: The buyer acknowledges that they made the payment themselves but that the goods or services they purchased either weren’t delivered or satisfactory to what they thought they would receive. Cash App does not cover sellers who receive a non-fraud dispute from Cash App Pay. Sellers must follow the normal dispute process, wherein they can choose to challenge the dispute with evidence and, upon review of the dispute from either Cash App or the cardholder’s bank, either win or lose. This process is similar to how all other non-Cash App Pay disputes are handled.

Troubleshooting

In cases where your customer has trouble using Cash App Pay, here are some troubleshooting tips.

Unable to scan QR code

If a customer is having trouble with the QR code scanner in their Cash App, you can suggest they try the following:

  • Make sure both the mobile device and the app are up to date.
  • Turn the mobile device off and on again.
  • Force quit the app on the device and log back in.
  • Delete and reinstall Cash App.
  • Make sure the ability to scan QR codes on the mobile device is enabled.
  • Scan the QR code with a smartphone camera or third-party QR code scanning app.

Customer is logged out

Customers who attempt to use a third-party scanning app to scan a Cash App QR code while logged out of Cash App will need to log in and attempt the payment again.

Insufficient funds

If a customer makes a payment using Cash App but doesn’t have enough funds in their balance, Square will attempt to pull the entire payment from the customer’s linked debit card or bank account in their Cash App profile. If there is no linked payment source in their Cash App, the payment will decline.

Customer doesn’t have Cash App

Customers who haven’t downloaded Cash App to their mobile device can’t use the Cash App Pay feature until they do. When the customer scans the QR code, a link will open on their device and prompt them to download and sign up for Cash App.
