Print Order Tickets

Connect Compatible Hardware

Before you enable Order Tickets on your Square Point of Sale app, learn how to connect a printer to your:

Enable Order Tickets and Order Ticket Stubs

  • An order ticket will show all the details of an order (e.g. a salad item will list that it includes extra lettuce, extra tomato, extra dressing, and no spinach).

    • Once order tickets are enabled, new orders will automatically print from your supported printing device, even if a customer receipt isn’t printed.

  • An order ticket stub will simply show that 1 salad is being ordered (with no details about what's included in the salad).

You’re able to differentiate between new and existing orders as new orders will be highlighted grey in the Orders section of your online Square Dashboard and on your Square POS app. 

Enable Order Tickets for Square Point of Sale

Once your printer is connected:

  1. Tap ≡ More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.

  2. Tap Settings > Checkout > Order tickets.

  3. Choose Auto-assign ticket numbers or Enter custom number or name.

Note: Auto-assigned ticket numbers will keep your lines moving quickly, as you won’t have to manually add names to each order ticket.

Enable Order Tickets for Square for Restaurants

  1. Go to Settings > Devices.

  2. Select an existing Restaurants device or click Add a Point of Sale to add a new device.

  3. Under "Order Tickets," choose between Automatically assign ticket numbers when the order is sent or Enter a custom number or name before sending the order.

Note: Predefined tickets and table names will not be impacted on kitchen tickets. Editing this behavior will also override how existing printer stations at this location behave.

Print Order Tickets

Connect a printer to your device to print order tickets for customers or send order tickets to your kitchen. If you accept pick-up orders with the Square POS app on an iPad, you can also automatically print remote order tickets.

You can also print single items per order ticket with orders received from your Square Online website and via Self-serve ordering via QR codes.

Note: For printing orders in a kitchen, we recommend the Star SP742ML impact printer, which is designed to handle the high-heat environment of a kitchen, and supports printing in both black and red. Impact printers don’t print receipts, only order tickets.

Print Order Tickets with Square Point of Sale

  1. Tap ≡ More > Hardware > Printers.

  2. Tap Create printer station or select an existing printer.

  3. Enter the printer name, select the printer model, and configure your settings under "Use this printer for" by tapping each section and toggling on the relevant settings for your business.

    • Receipts

    • In-person order tickets

    • Online order tickets

    • Order ticket stubs

    • Void tickets

  4. Tap Save.

Print Order Tickets with Square Register

With Square Register you can enable your device to automatically print new incoming orders. To do so:

  1. Tap ≡ More > Hardware > Printers.

  2. Select your printer from the list and toggle on Online order tickets.

  3. Toggle on Use this printer for online order tickets.

From here, you can choose to print a single item per ticket, compact tickets, automatically print new orders, and select order categories to print.

Print Order Tickets with Square Terminal

On Square Terminal, you’ll have to tap the Print Receipts button after the transaction is completed to print order tickets on the internal Square Terminal printer. This is not the case, however, if you print to external printers from Square Terminal.

Reprint Order Tickets

You can reprint an order ticket from the Transactions tab or Open Ticket list.

To reprint your transactions from the Square POS app:

  1. Tap Transactions.

  2. Locate the order you’d like to reprint > tap Reprint Ticket.

Note: For closed tickets, the option to reprint will only appear if the order is completed in the last 1 hour.

To reprint from your open tickets:

  1. On the Checkout screen, tap Tickets.

  2. Select ticket to reprint > tap Reprint Ticket.

Print to Multiple Printers

If you’re using multiple printers, you can also send specific items to a selected printer. For example, send drink orders directly to the printer located at your bar. When configuring your printers, make sure to select which item categories will print for each one.

To do so from the Square POS app or Square Terminal:

  1. Tap ≡ More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.

  2. Tap Settings > Hardware > Printers > select your desired printer.

  3. Under "In-person order tickets" and "Online order tickets," tap Categories to print to choose the categories you’d like to print.

  4. Repeat on additional printers.

  5. Tap Save.

Print Single Items per Order Ticket

With the Square POS app on your iOS device, you can assign item categories to different printer stations, and print a single item per order ticket. This is useful if you need to send specific items to different prep stations or service counters to fulfil orders.

To get started, be sure to assign your items to specific categories. Once complete, you can assign categories to print at each station. To do so from the Square POS app:

  1. Tap ≡ More > Settings > Hardware > Printers.

  2. Select the relevant printer station.

  3. Under "Use this printer for," navigate to either In-Person Order Tickets or Online Order Tickets, and toggle on Use this printer for in-person order tickets or Use this printer for online order tickets respectively.

  4. Toggle on Single Item Per Ticket on if you want to print a single item per ticket. This is useful if you need to send specific items to different prep stations or service counters to fulfil orders.

  5. Select the category(s) you’d like to print at this printer station. Single-item printing will only apply to the categories you select.

  6. Repeat these steps for each of your printer stations.

  7. Tap Save.

Important to note

  • Compact tickets (saving printer paper) are not yet available in Order Manager.

  • You can also print single items per order ticket with orders received from your Square Online website and via Self-serve ordering. Learn more about printing and managing online orders.

Print Multiple Order Tickets to One Printer

To use one printer to print multiple order tickets from the Square POS app:

  1. Tap More > Settings > Hardware > Printers.

  2. Tap Create printer station.

  3. Enter a printer station name and tap Printer to select your connected printer.

  4. Under the section Use this printer for, toggle on whether you’d like to print: ReceiptsIn-person order ticketsOnline order ticketsOrder ticket stubs or Void tickets.

  5. Tap Save.

  6. Repeat these steps to create multiple printer stations to print multiple order tickets.

Group Items on Order Tickets

To customize your item grouping settings from the Square POS app, Square for Restaurants POS app, or Square Retail POS app:

  1. Tap ≡ More > Settings > Hardware > Printers.

  2. Tap the relevant printer station, then scroll down to "In-person order tickets."

  3. Ensure Use printer for in-person order tickets is enabled, then toggle on Combine identical items. Items with the same details will then be automatically combined into one line item. 

If you toggle on "Single item per ticket," this setting overrides grouping items and automatically prints each item, ungrouped, on its own ticket.

Note: The Combine identical items setting is toggled off by default for existing printer stations, but will be enabled by default for all new printer stations you create. Learn more about grouping items.

For grouped modifiers, line item modifiers also include a quantity. This information is displayed on printed order tickets and on the Orders tab on your Point of Sale. To view, tap ≡ More > Orders > select an order, and review the item information.
