I am Georgie. I'm the founder of Peony Vintage and we are based in Margate Old Town. My mum is a singer and a seamstress, and I grew up traveling around with her from show to show, and I was always surrounded by clothes and costumes, and I think that that's had a huge part in why I love vintage so much now.
I made the choice to go full-time with the shop in summer 2017. I found starting my own business really scary, but I think what my mum's taught me with her style is just to have no fear and just to be brave and go for it. Margate is thriving at the moment. Most of the businesses in the Old Town and on the High Street are independent.
Vintage clothing is such a niche. People aren't always on the lookout for it, so they need to be able to use their card there and then otherwise the sale becomes an issue. I have noticed that people carry cash less, but the Square app allows you to take cash payments as well as cards so you can do everything at once when it comes to your accounting. I couldn't do that with my previous card reader.
I've sold to people in Denmark, people in Italy, and people in Spain. Once people are aware of my business, technologies like Square allow me to sell to them wherever they are.
