Ammanford is an ex-mining town. In 2003, the last of the mines closed and a town lost its purpose. Coaltown is a specialty coffee roastery. The idea is to try and bring back employment to the local area and bring a new industry to Ammanford.
My name is Scott James and founder of Coaltown Coffee.
I worked in a few different places and I always wanted to set up my own business. When we moved from being a wholesale business into having a retail element, we wanted a quality point-of-sale system. Square was our first choice. The setup was really easy. Me and the accounts director spent the night before opening the roastery, just getting all the inventory on and it was ready to go. We've never been interested in training any of the software.
For this area, which is quite cash heavy, we've done something quite unique. We decided that the roastery and canteen would be card only. It is the way the future, and I do believe cash will be the thing of the past. We've got a food element, we've got a pourover station, and we've got an espresso bar, and those three separate islands need to communicate with each other first to be able to deliver food quickly and effectively.
From a barista's perspective, it's really easy for them to be able to itemize each product to print at different terminals at different times. It's aesthetic and fits with our brands, and we couldn't ask for better. Using a point-of-sale system that's so revolutionary has really opened people's eyes in local area. We are looking to open more cafes over the next five years, so Square will be our partner to grow.
