Print from Square KDS

Connect a printer to your KDS to print order tickets for your customers for in-person, delivery and pickup orders. Note: Bluetooth printers are not supported with Square KDS for Android.

Create a printer profile for the KDS

Once you connect your supported printer, you can create a printer profile on the KDS to start routing categories to separate printers. To get started:

  1. On the KDS, tap Settings > Printers

  2. Under ‘Connect and manage’, tap Printers

  3. Select Create a Printer Profile.

  4. Name your printer and select the ticket types you want sent to this printer.

  5. Under ‘Use this printer for’, select Order Tickets.

  6. Toggle on Use this printer for order tickets, Single item for ticket, Compact tickets, and Receipts.

  7. Tap Save.

Note: Order tickets are not automatically printed for each order and you’ll need to manually select the orders you want to print.

Print order tickets and receipts

To print an order from your KDS:

  1. Locate the order you want to print. 

  2. Tap the printer icon.

To automatically print receipts, visit Settings > Printers > and toggle on Automatically Print Receipts at Order Completion. Automatic receipt printing currently works for online orders only.

Note: To print a receipt, the order must be paid. Orders without an associated payment are cannot be printed, including $0 orders.  

Group Items

To customise your item grouping settings:

  1. On Square KDS, select Devices > Kitchen Settings.

  2. Toggle on Combine identical items. Items with the same details will then be automatically combined into one line item. 

If you toggle on Single item per ticket, this setting overrides grouping items and automatically prints each item, ungrouped, on its own ticket.

Note: Combine identical items is off by default for existing printer profiles but will turn on by default for all new printer stations you create. Learn more about grouping items.

Test a printer profile

When you create a printer profile, the printer name displayed is automatically determined by each expo station. If you have multiple expo stations connected to a single printer, each expo may generate a different name.

To test a printer with multiple expo stations connected:

  1. Open the KDS and tap Settings > Printers

  2. Next, tap the printer you’d like to test.

  3. Tap Soak Test Printer Profile.
