Once you have Terminal, you can turn your Mac or PC computer into an all-in-one POS system. If you don’t have a Square Terminal, you can always key in payments directly with Virtual Terminal.
Square POS software is free to use – only pay when you accept a payment. For remote payments with Square Virtual Terminal, you pay 2.2% per keyed-in transaction. For in-person payments with Virtual Terminal, it costs $329 to purchase Square Terminal. Once you wirelessly connect Square Terminal to your computer, you pay 1.6% per tap, insert or swipe transaction.

You can use Virtual Terminal to manage and track cash, cheques and other types of payments. There’s no fee to accept these other tender types. When you accept other tender types, Square doesn’t process any funds and functions just as an organisational tool. Money for transactions involving cash or cheque payments exchanged directly between you and your customer will not be transferred by Square.
Both your computer and Square Terminal must be connected to a Wi-Fi or Ethernet network in order to connect the devices wirelessly. While they don’t need to be connected to the same network, both devices must be online.
