About printing sticky item labels

Printing sticky labels helps businesses like coffee shops and quick service restaurants complete orders more efficiently by automating the process of writing down each drink and food order and their modifiers. Printing labels results in fewer human errors and produces professional tickets for your in-person, take-out, and delivery orders. Sticky label printing also helps with printing individual labels per item in an order (e.g., individual boba tea orders, including modifiers with the level of sweetness, ice, etc.).

Before you begin

To set up sticky label printing, you will need:

  • A compatible label printer. Check the device compatibility before purchasing the label printer.

  • Heat resistant thermal labels (sold separately) can stick to virtually any surface, including paper and plastic cups and food containers, and can be easily removed and reapplied, leaving behind no residue.

USB sticky label printers are not compatible with Square Terminal or iOS with Square Reader. If you’re using iOS with Square Reader, opt for an Ethernet sticky label printer.

Create sticky labels

To create your own professional sticky labels for in-person orders, you will need to set up printer profiles with the settings for your labels and then assign it to your label printer.

  1. Tap ≡ More > Settings > Hardware > Printers > Connect printer.

    1. If you have multiple devices across multiple locations, tap Profiles > Create profile.

  2. Tap Printer and select your label printer.

  3. Toggle on In-person order tickets.

  4. Toggle on Single item per ticket. Note: You can select Compact Ticket to save paper.

  5. Configure any additional settings, then tap Save.

  6. Tap Assign printer.

  7. Connect your sticky label printer.

Change paper size

On compatible iOS devices using Square Reader, you have the ability to change paper roll size. To do so from the Square Point of Sale app:

  1. Tap ≡ More > Settings.

  2. Tap Hardware and select the connected printer.

  3. Under Printer settings > Paper size, tap Change.

Print sticky labels

Once the printer profile is configured to print in-person order tickets with a single item per ticket, the label will automatically print out when an order is placed through the Point of Sale. For example; if you are operating a coffee shop, when someone orders a latte and a cappuccino, the printer will automatically print out two separate sticky labels from that printer to go on each cup.
