The CAN-SPAM Act requires entities that send commercial emails to allow recipients to opt out of future emails. Square Marketing gives your customers the option to do so from all campaigns being sent. If a customer unsubscribes from further Square Marketing emails, they’ll be automatically opted out.
If you’ve imported a customer list from a different service like MailChimp or Constant Contact, you’ll need to make sure they’re also removed from those services’ lists. In these cases, you can view the subscription status for manually-added customers by exporting your directory to a CSV file.
To do so:
- Head to the Customers tab of your online Square Dashboard > click Directory.
- Click Import / Export > Export Customers.
- Click Download.
A .CSV file will download to your computer, which you can open using Excel or another common spreadsheet software. The information available in the spreadsheet is for customers that have been manually assigned to a transaction or who have been manually imported via your dashboard.
If they’ve opted out, you’ll see their email subscription status as True under the Email Unsubscribed column. Please note customer names automatically collected from transactions swiped through the newest version of the Square Reader won’t be included in the spreadsheet. This information will only show on the Transactions tab of your Square Dashboard.
