Accept cash and checks with Square

    To keep your payment records in one place, you can use Square to record and track cash, checks, gift cards from third-party services, and other types of payments.

    Before you begin

    • Transactions that aren’t processed electronically by Square devices (like cash or checks) are exchanged directly between you and your customer, and will not be transferred by Square. There is no fee to process these transactions. 

    • If you’re using or plan to use a cash drawer for your business, learn how to set up cash management with Square.

    Accept payments

    Accept cash, checks, and other tender with the Square app

    1. After setting up your customer’s cart, tap Charge.
    2. Tap either Cash, Check, Other Gift Card or Certificate, or Other Payment Types to enter an amount, then tap the button to record the payment. If you’re using an iPad connected to a cash drawer to record cash, your cash drawer will automatically open when you tap Tender.
    3. Allow your customer to enter their phone number or email address to select a receipt option. If your iPad is connected to a receipt or kitchen printer, you can also print a receipt and kitchen ticket.
    4. You’ll see a final screen with a check mark after the payment completes.

    1. After setting up your customer’s cart, tap Charge.
    2. Tap either Cash, Check, Other Gift Card or Certificate, or Other Payment Types to enter an amount, then tap the button to record the payment.
    3. Allow your customer to enter their phone number or email address to select a receipt option, or choose Print Receipt.
    4. You’ll see a final screen with a check mark after the payment completes.
