Square has simple and transparent pricing. Our best-in-class point-of-sale software is completely free and you'll always pay one low rate per card payment, so you can keep more of what you make. Square’s processing fees are deducted before funds are transferred to your linked bank account.

Square Invoices processing fees are deducted before funds are transferred to your linked bank account. With Square Invoices you are able to accept payments via a number of different methods (online, in-person, manually entered, card on file) with different rates.

There are no fees for:

• Activation

• Downloading the Square Point of Sale app

• Chargebacks and Dispute management

• Square Support

• Advanced reporting tools

• Account inactivity

• PCI compliance coverage

• Account takeover protection

• End-to-end encrypted payments

• Active fraud prevention

• Next-business-day transfers

• Free Square Reader for magstripe

• Early termination

Payment processing fees are taken out of the total amount of each transaction, including tax and tip. This fee covers all credit card fees and applies to every card brand at the same rate. The fee is deducted from the total transaction amount and applies to all businesses, including non-profit organizations.

Important to note

• If you are processing payments for CBD transactions as a part of the Square CBD Program, different fees will apply.

• You won’t pay any fees for Cash, Check, and Other Tender payment types. Learn how to accept cash and checks with Square.

View your processing fees by location

1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Account & Settings > Pricing & subscriptions.

2. Click the Main account filter box and select the location you want to view processing rates for.

If you don't see the Main account filter box, scroll down to the Processing Fees section.

Square fees by payment type on Square Free, Square Plus, and Square Premium

Square fees by payment type on legacy plans

Legacy plans are the previously offered individually priced subscriptions, such as Square for Restaurants, Square for Retail, and Square Appointments. If you are not subscribed to Square Free, Square Plus, or Square Premium, then you are on a legacy plan.

Here are the processing fees for legacy plan subscribers:

• Swiped Magstripe Cards: 2.6% + 15¢ **

• Swiped or Inserted Chip Cards: 2.6% + 15¢ **

• Contactless (NFC) Payments: 2.6% + 15¢ **

• Tap to Pay on iPhone: 2.6% + 15¢ **

• Tap to Pay on Android: 2.6% + 15¢ **

• Point-of-Sale API Swiped or Inserted Payments: 2.6% + 15¢ **

• Swiped Virtual Terminal Payments: 2.6% + 15¢ **

• Payment Links Through Text in Virtual Terminal: 3.3% + 30¢ **

• Card on File Transactions: 3.5% + 15¢*

• Manually Entered Card Payments: 3.5% + 15¢*

• Point-of-Sale API Keyed-In Payments: 3.5% + 15¢*

• Manually Entered Virtual Terminal Payments: 3.5% + 15¢*

• Square eCommerce API: 2.9% + 30¢

• Online payments: 2.9% + 30¢ **

• Square Invoices: 3.3% + 30¢ **

• Square Payment Links: 3.3% + 30¢ **

• Subscription Payments: 3.3% + 30¢ **

• Cash App Pay (Card-Present Transactions): 2.6% + 15¢ **

• Cash App Pay (Card-Non-Present Transactions): 2.9% + 30¢ **

• Neighborhoods on Cash App: 1% for participating Neighborhoods sellers.

• ACH Transactions: 1%, minimum $1 **

  • $0 fees for ACH transactions deposited into Square Checking

  • $10 fee cap on all ACH bank transfer payments.

*The higher fee for manually entered transactions is due to a greater risk involved with these payments, as neither the payment card nor the cardholder needs to be present for the payment to occur.

Bitcoin fees

• Bitcoin conversions: 1% conversion fee applied to the total amount of your daily converted sales.

• Bitcoin buy/sell: 1% (plus a small spread may apply).

• Bitcoin payments: 0% processing fees until December 31, 2026, after which it will be 1%.

• Bitcoin withdrawals: Incur standard Bitcoin Network fees for faster withdrawals but are otherwise free for Standard (24-hour) withdrawals.***

  • Standard (free, ~24 hours)

  • Rush ($2 flat fee + pro rata share of network fees, ~1 hour)

  • Priority ($3 flat fee + pro rata share of network fees, ~20 minutes)

*** Pro Rata fees for priority and rush withdrawal speeds are calculated based on estimated network transaction fees at the time of your transaction and may fluctuate. A network transaction fee is a payment made to miners for adding bitcoin transfers to the blockchain. Square pays network transactions fees on your behalf with the fees charged to you at the time of the transaction. These fees can be impacted by your chosen withdrawal speed, blockchain congestion, and the specifics of each transaction. Blockchain congestion varies depending on how many people are trying to make transfers on the Bitcoin Network and can result in increased fees at certain times. The actual network fees that Square pays may differ from the estimated network fees for your transaction, and at times Square may charge you more than the estimated network fees for your transaction to account for periods of volatility and ensure transaction fees are fully paid. All transaction fees will be displayed on the transaction confirmation screen before you complete your transaction.

Afterpay fees

Square sellers using Afterpay get paid the full amount at the time of purchase, minus a processing fee on the total order. Enabling Afterpay with Square is free — there are no monthly fees or startup costs. You only pay when you make a sale. There are no processing fees charged on the remaining installments or if your customer makes a late payment.

• In-person (including Square POS, Retail POS, Restaurants POS, and Appointments POS): 6% + 30¢

• Online: 6% + 30¢

• Square Invoices: 6% + 30¢

• Virtual Terminal (card not present): 6% + 30¢

• Connected Square Terminal to Virtual Terminal (card present): 6% + 30¢

Square Gift Cards fees

With Square Gift Cards, you will pay a 2.5% load fee of the total amount loaded on to the gift card whenever you load or reload a physical gift card or digital eGift card online or in store. There are no additional fees to redeem Square Gift Cards. 

For digital eGift cards you will pay a credit card-not-present processing fee of 2.9% + 30¢** for cards sold online through your Square eGift Card order site. If you sell your eGift cards through the Square app, you’ll pay the credit card processing rate based on our standard card processing rates.

Square does not charge load fees when you issue refunds to gift cards.
