Sell Items by Weight

If your business needs to sell items by weight, you can create items with weight-based units and connect a compatible scale to start selling with the Square app.

Create an item to sell by weight

In order to sell items by weight or use a compatible scale with your Square account, you’ll need to make sure you have the appropriate unit types enabled for weight measurements. You can use the following unit types: Gram (g), Pound (lb), and * Ounce (oz).

Online

  1. Head to your online Square Dashboard > Items & Orders > Items > Units.

  2. Click Add Unit.

  3. Next, in order to sell an item by weight, make sure to choose a weight measure.

  4. Once you set up the weight unit and precision, head to your Item Library > click Create an Item. Enter the item name, category, details, and make sure to select a unit type for weight.

  5. Once you’re all set, click Save.

App

  1. Log into the Square app and tap More > Items.

  2. Next, tap Unit > Create Unit — make sure to choose a weight measure

  3. Next, head to Items > Create Item. Enter the item name, category, details, and make sure to select a unit type for weight.

  4. Once you’re all set, click Save.

Connect Bluetooth Scale to iPads

Once you purchase your compatible mG-S8200 NTEP Scale, you’re ready to connect it to the Square app.

To connect a Bluetooth scale to your device:

  1. Make sure your Bluetooth settings on your device are turned on.

  2. To check the connection, open the Square Point of Sale app and tap More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen. Then tap Settings > Hardware > Scales.

  3. Next, tap Connect a Scale.

  4. You’ll see a list of supported scales. Tap Connect to pair a scale to your device.

Your settings will be automatically saved. If your scale disconnects, your Square app will remember your settings and attempt to reconnect. You can also double check your Bluetooth settings and manually attempt to reconnect, following the steps outlined above.

Note: Bluetooth scales can pair with only one mobile device at a time. To pair your Bluetooth scale with a different iPhone or iPad, you’ll first need to unpair it.

Unpair Scale

To unpair your scale:

  1. Open the Square Point of Sale app and tap More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen. Then tap Settings > Hardware > Scales.

  2. You’ll see your connected scale — tap Disconnect to unpair.

Sell items by weight

Once you’ve created your items and connected a compatible scale, you’re ready to start selling:

  1. From the Square app, select an item from your library. If the item is variably priced, enter the item price and then the + symbol.

  2. Enter the weight manually, or place the item on your scale.

  3. Once the weight is calculated, tap Add.

  4. Complete the sale by processing your customer’s payment.

If the unit type is not compatible with your scale, you’ll need to enter the amount manually. Also, make sure your scale units and item units match.
