  • About selling items by weight

If your business needs to sell items by weight, you can create items with weight-based units and generate prices by weight in the Square Point of Sale app.

Square facilitates multiple options to sell items by weight, depending on what suits your business. You can manually input sales if you don’t often sell items by weight, connect a scale to your point of sale to automatically price items at checkout, or use a barcode label-printing scale so customers can self-serve weighing their items.

    Before you begin

To sell items by weight, first make sure the items in your inventory are assigned the appropriate unit types for weight measurements. You can use the following unit types: Gram (g), Pound (lb), and Ounce (oz). Learn how to create and edit item unit types.

There are three options to sell items by weight:

Item modifiers are not compatible with barcode scanners, regardless of if the item is sold by weight or not. Instead, use item variations with different SKUs or price look-up codes (PLU) for each variation and its associated price.

    Sell items by weight manually

Once you create your unit types and items, you’re ready to start selling:

    1. Select an item from your library in the Square app. If the item is variably priced, enter the item price and then the (+) symbol.

    2. Enter the weight manually to calculate a final price.

    3. Tap Add once the weight is calculated.

    4. Complete the sale by processing your customer’s payment.

Sell items via a connected scale

Once you create your items and connect a compatible scale, you’re ready to start selling:

    1. Select an item from your library in the Square app. If the item is variably priced, enter the item price and then the (+) symbol.

    2. Place the item on your connected scale.

    3. Tap Add once the weight is calculated.

    4. Complete the sale by processing your customer’s payment.

    Sell items with price-embedded barcodes

Once you configure your items in your item library and on your label-printing scale, and connect a barcode scanner–you're ready to start selling:

    1. Place an item on your label-printing scale to weigh and print a barcode label.

    2. Scan the barcode label with your connected barcode scanner to add the item and price to your sale.

    3. Complete the sale by processing your customer’s payment.
