Review answers to frequently asked questions about using Square Online Checkout.
All Square merchants have a per transaction limit of $50,000. Donations are limited to $5,000 per transaction.
Yes. Once you enable checkout links, you can send your customers a marketing campaign and include checkout links. Just copy and paste the checkout link into the body of the marketing campaign. Learn more about using checkout links with Square Marketing.
For transactions completed through Square Online Checkout links, source reporting will show Checkout Link as the source in the Square dashboard. You can also see total sales per link (for the past year) in the Square Online Checkout home page.
In order for your employees to see Online Checkout sales transactions (including their own), you need to enable Transactions in Permissions:
- From your online Square Dashboard, go to Staff > Team > Permissions.
- Select Edit Permissions.
- Select Transactions from the list of permissions and toggle on Transactions. Note: “View all completed sales transactions for all team members” check box must be checked.
- Select Continue to set up access points.
- Select Save when finished.
Yes. To enable the Online Checkout permissions for your team:
- From your online Square Dashboard, go to Staff > Team > Permissions.
- Select the button to enable or edit permissions Edit Permissions.
- Select Online Checkout from the list of permissions and toggle on Online Checkout. Note: If you want to enable all permissions in the list at once (except bank account management), toggle on Full access.
- Select Continue to set up access points.
- Select Save when finished.
You can view each checkout link from the Online Checkout home page. Just select Create a checkout link in the Online Checkout section of your Dashboard, and you will see all of the links you’ve created in one place. Click on the item you want to view and a card will slide out which displays the link URL.
Yes. Customers can apply the coupons you create with Square Marketing to the Square Online Checkout payment links you share with them. Your customers will need to enter the coupon code in the designated field in your payment link’s checkout screen for the discount to apply. One coupon can be applied per payment link.
If you also have Square Online, navigate to your Square Online Overview page > Items > Item Sync to turn on the Automatically add new items to this site option and make sure your items are set to Visible. This will make sure those items are available for online selling through your checkout links.
Yes. Click Advanced Settings > Add custom fields to add up to two custom fields to your checkout link and request additional information from your customers.
Images are available for checkout links that are created in the Item Library. Navigate to your Item Library to enable checkout links and add an image for your item.
When you create a Square Online Checkout link for an event from your online Square Dashboard, enter the number of participants in the Event capacity field in the Advanced Settings section.
Yes. To direct your customers to a page on your website after they complete the checkout process, toggle on Redirect to a website after checkout in the Advanced Settings section and add a custom URL.
Not at this time. Customers will receive a basic Square receipt by default. There is not a way to customize the receipts associated with checkout link purchases.
Yes. On your Square Point of Sale, select the Online Checkout add-on and go to your Online Checkout Settings to set up a shipping rate.
Online Checkout can only be enabled for one location at a time. To confirm the location where you are currently logged in to the app, select ≡ More > Settings > Account > Location.
You can change the location you want to use to track sales and inventory for checkout links in your Square Dashboard by going to Payments > Online Checkout > Settings > General and selecting a Primary Location.
When a customer clicks the checkout link for an item, they’ll be directed to a single checkout page where they can pay with a card of their choice, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Cash App Pay. Buy now, pay later with Afterpay is also available for eligible accounts. Learn how to accept payments with Afterpay.
Calculate and apply tax rates automatically for your Square Online Checkout payment links in your online Square Dashboard.
To enable sales taxes:
- From your online Square Dashboard, select Online Checkout.
- Go to Settings > General.
- Under Automatic settings, toggle on Apply sales tax to calculate taxes based on seller and buyer location for “Sell an item,” “Accept a payment,” and “Sell classes and tickets” links. Taxes will not be applied to “Accept a donation” links.
Note: Taxes set up in Square settings through Account & Settings > Business information > Sales tax will not impact Online Checkout links created in Dashboard.
