Get Started with Square Online Checkout Links

Use Square Online Checkout links to allow your customers to purchase anything you want to sell online – without creating an eCommerce website.

Send your customers a checkout link through an email campaign or let your customers purchase at their convenience by posting the link on social media or your blog. There is no monthly fee for using Square Online Checkout links. You’ll only pay Square’s standard eCommerce processing fee of 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction.

Currently, only businesses that have a Square account have access to Square Online Checkout. If you’re not a Square customer, sign up and create your first checkout link today.

Get Started

You can start accepting payments with Online Checkout through your Square Dashboard or Square App. You can create checkout links for the following options:

  • Collect payments – to accept money for any reason.

  • Buyer entered payments – to let your customers pay an amount of their choice.

  • Items – to accept money for items in your Item library.

  • Donations – to allow a donor to enter an amount of their choice.

To create a checkout link from your Square Dashboard:

  1. Head to the Homepage of your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Click Create checkout link in the Online Checkout section.

  3. Next to Purpose of link, choose either Collect payments, Sell items or Accept Donations.

  4. Enter a name for your link. This will be displayed to the customer.

  5. If prompted, enter the amount you want to charge.

  6. Add an image by selecting Add Image > Download. Select either an image from your files or from your existing item library. Note: If adding a new image for an item in your library that already has one, the new image will automatically replace the previous image.

  7. Add a description (if needed). The description for each Checkout link has a 400 character limit.

  8. Click Save.

  9. Select Copy, and share the link anywhere.

Add a description

You can easily add a short description to your Checkout link on your Square Dashboard.

  • When creating a new link for a new product in your item library, you can add a brand new description. This description will sync back to your item library for future use.

  • When creating a Checkout link for an existing item in your library, you can use your pre-existing description or you can create a new description to overwrite the previous one.

Note: Managing descriptions is currently only available on the Square Dashboard.

Square Online Checkout links are only available for domestic sales. If you’d like to sell online internationally or create a fully customizable eCommerce website, take a look at Square Online.

Accept Notes from Your Customers

Enable your customers to add a comment or note while they checkout. This will better help your business:

  • Collect needed order information from your customers.

  • Track donation details.

  • Customize your customer’s orders.

To get started accepting notes from your customers, visit your online Square Dashboard.

  1. From the main menu, select Online Checkout.

  2. Navigate to Settings > General.

  3. Scroll down to Note from Customer and toggle ON.

  4. Click Save.

When your customers pay through a checkout link, they’ll see a box for an optional note. Any information entered by your customer in the note section at checkout will appear on the order details for each transaction. Simply select Transactions from your Online Checkout dashboard and click on any payment to see your customer note. You’ll also see this information in Order Manager.

If you have Square Online set up, navigate to Square Online > Settings > Checkout > Advanced Settings > Allow customer to leave a note to seller.

Enable Tipping

When you’re creating a Checkout link, you can easily allow for tips from your customers. To get started with accepting tips from your customers, visit your online Square Dashboard.

  1. Click Create a checkout link in the Online Checkout section.

  2. Next to Purpose of link, choose Collect payments.

  3. Select Enable Tipping.

  4. Enter a name for your link and the amount you want to charge.

  5. Click Create Link then select Copy and share the link anywhere.

  6. Your customers will now automatically see tipping settings of 15%, 20% and 25% on their payment link, with a default tip percentage of 15%. 

Note: Tipping is currently not available for links with subscriptions or recurring payments.

Access Checkout Links

Once you’ve created checkout links, you’re ready to start accepting payments online. You can manage all of your links from the Online Checkout section of your online Square Dashboard.

  1. Head to the Home page of your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Select Create a checkout link in the Online Checkout section.You’ll see the Online Checkout home page, where you can view a list of all of your links and the sales generated from each link for both active and inactive.

You can also access and enable Online Checkout links for items in your Item Library:

  1. Head to Items in your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Select the item you want to sell with a checkout link.

  3. Toggle the button to On in the checkout link section.

When you enable Checkout links from your Item Library you have access to more Online Checkout options which include:

  • Enabling a Shipping Fee through Online Checkout Settings

  • Collecting shipping information such as address on the checkout page

  • Enabling online sales tax Online Checkout Settings

  • Displaying Product image on the checkout page

  • Displaying product variants on the checkout page

  • Including multiple items in one Checkout link for ease of payment

  • Providing a detailed item or cart description

Note: The blue chain-link symbol means your Online Checkout link is active, and grey indicates your Online Checkout link is inactive.

Only the account owner has permission to enable Square Online Checkout links. Once the account owner enables this feature, employees with Square Dashboard access can then view and copy checkout links.

Share Checkout Links

Once you’ve copied checkout links, you’re ready to share your links anywhere. Add a checkout link to an email, your social media page or your blog. Additionally, you can send out a customizable Square Marketing campaign to a targeted customer group.

When a customer clicks the checkout link for an item, they’ll be directed to a single checkout page where they can pay with a card or their choice or Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Keep in mind, purchases made with checkout links will not issue a standard customized receipt. Instead, they’ll generate a basic digital receipt.

Checkout Link QR Codes

You can download and print a custom QR code to direct your customers to Online Checkout links, offering a simple contactless payment solution that will allow your customers to self-serve.

To create a QR code for an Item from your online Square Dashboard:

  1. Log in to your online Square Dashboard

  2. Using the three horizontal line menu, select Online Checkout

  3. Select the Item you want to generate a QR code for.

  4. Under the section for Share your link, find the QR code option and click Create.

  5. Download QR Code to your device to print it for use in your business.

Use Checkout Buttons

When you create checkout links, we create complementary Checkout Buttons that direct your customers to a checkout page for anything you want to accept money for.

Checkout Buttons help you add items for sale to a website or blog post without creating a new online store. The Checkout Button can show specific information such as the product image title and price. You can even adjust the colour of your button to match the look and feel of your website.

To get started:

  1. Head to the Home page of your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Click Create a checkout link in the Online Checkout section.

  3. Select the Online Checkout item you want to share.

  4. Click Copy embed code.

  5. Paste the code into any website or blog.

Customize Checkout Button

You are also able to customize the Checkout Button style and text. This allows you to reflect the branding of your website when embedding Checkout Buttons.

To customize your Checkout Button style:

  1. Head to the Settings tab of the Online Checkout home.

  2. Under the Settings tab, click Button Style.

  3. Within the Online Checkout Settings tab, select Button style.

  4. Choose your Content and Button colour.

  5. Press Save.

Keep in mind that the Button Style settings apply to all Checkout Buttons.

To customize your Checkout Button text:

  1. Head to the Online Checkout home.

  2. Select the Online Checkout item you want to edit.

  3. Select Edit button text in the Checkout Button section of the item detail sheet.

  4. Enter the new button text and press Save.

Create a Marketing Campaign with Checkout Links

You can also promote your items by reaching your customers with a Square Marketing campaign.

To include Square Online Checkout link in your campaign:

  1. Head to the Home page of your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Select Create a checkout link in the Online Checkout section.

  3. Copy any link by clicking the blue chain-link icon.

  4. Create your campaign by heading to the Marketing tab of your online Square Dashboard. Depending on the campaign type, you can paste the checkout link directly in the body text.

  5. Once you send your marketing campaign, customers can click on the checkout link to purchase items on the spot.

Note: At this time, you will not be able to track click-through rate for checkout links.

Checkout Link Reporting

You can easily track the amount of sales generated from each checkout link. This allows you to know which links are performing best.

To view the amount of sales per checkout link:

  1. Head to the Online Checkout home page.

  2. Review the sales per link in the Sales (past year) column.

You can also view all of your sales the online Square Dashboard when you filter by Source > Checkout Links.

Deactivate Checkout Links

You can deactivate and delete a checkout link at any time. Just keep in mind, if you’ve previously shared the link with your customers, once you disable it they will no longer be able to purchase the item via the link.

To disable a checkout link:

  1. Head to the Online Checkout home page.

  2. Select the Online Checkout item you want to deactivate or delete.

  3. Click Deactivate or Delete at the bottom of the item details page.

Subscriptions with Checkout Links

Subscription checkout links can be used to accept weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual payments from multiple customers with a single checkout link. For more info on getting started, visit Subscriptions in Square Online Checkout.

Buyer Entered Payments

In addition to being able to set the price for your Square Checkout Links, you also have the option to allow your customers to enter a custom amount at checkout. This setting is accessible from both the Square Dashboard and Square Point of Sale app.

From your online Square Dashboard:

  1. Click Create checkout link in the Online Checkout section.

  2. Next to Purpose of link, choose either Collect payments, Sell items or Accept Donations.

  3. Toggle on Allow buyer to enter custom amount

  4. Enter a name for your link. This will be displayed to the customer.

  5. If prompted, enter the amount you want to charge.

  6. Click Save to create a checkout link.

  7. Select Copy, and share the link anywhere.
