Afterpay and Square

Afterpay is a buy now, pay later (BNPL) payment option that allows customers to pay for their purchases in four interest-free instalments. Merchants get paid in full – immediately. If eligible to accept Afterpay on your Square account, you can process Afterpay payments:

Square Online

Your Square Online website will be automatically enabled for Afterpay transactions between $1 to $2,000. Accepting Afterpay will enable you to boost online sales, increase average cart size and attract new customers. No additional integration is required.

Square Online Checkout

You can create payment links with Square Online Checkout, allowing customers to select Afterpay as a payment method for transactions between $1 to $2,000.

Invoices

With Square Invoices, you can enable Afterpay acceptance when sending digital invoices and estimates via your online Square Dashboard, Square POS app or Square Invoices app.

Note: Afterpay in-person acceptance is not yet available in Canada.

Features

  • Give your customers more payment flexibility at checkout and see how your online and in-person sales can grow.

  • Afterpay customers spend 40% more per transaction and shop 50% more frequently than traditional customers.

  • Afterpay drives new business for merchants by sending out over 1M referrals globally every day.

Pricing

Enabling Afterpay with Square is free – there are no monthly fees or startup costs. The Afterpay processing fee is 6% + 30¢ per Afterpay order across all Square products that accept it.

  • Square sellers using Afterpay get paid the full amount at the time of purchase, minus a processing fee on the total order.

  • You only pay when you make a sale – there are no processing fees charged on the remaining instalments or if your customer makes a late payment.

  • Afterpay rates are fixed and do not vary by subscription type, hardware or custom pricing.

Eligibility

Eligibility for Afterpay online acceptance is dependent on numerous factors, including how your business is structured and what you sell. Eligibility includes, but is not limited to:

  • Sellers must be in an approved merchant category

  • Sellers must be based in Canada

  • Sellers cannot have multiple Tax Identification Numbers (TINs)

  • Sellers cannot sell restricted digital goods or services

  • Cross-border orders not supported at this time

We’ll work to expand the availability of Afterpay over time to give more sellers the opportunity to enable it on their sites. Review our Afterpay Merchant Terms for more information on eligibility, merchant categories and more.

Enable or Disable Afterpay

You can enable/disable Afterpay directly from your app or via the Payment Methods tab on your online Square Dashboard.

Square Dashboard

  1. Go to Account & Settings from your online Square Dashboard.
  2. Click Business information > Payment methods.
  3. Next to the Afterpay payment method, click ••• then Edit settings.
  4. Toggle the Online setting on/off.
  5. Click Save.

Important to note

  • When enabled, the Online option ensures you can offer Afterpay to customers on your Square Online Checkout links. If disabled, customers can’t use Afterpay to check out.

  • The setting for online payments with Afterpay is global and applies across all Square products that can also take Afterpay payments online. This includes other online platforms such as Square Online and Virtual Terminal. There isn’t a way to disable Afterpay only for Square Online Checkout links at this time.
