Get Started with Square Online Checkout Links

Once you set up your item library with Square, you can enable Square Online Checkout links to allow your customers to purchase from a checkout page — without creating an eCommerce website.

Note: If you have multiple locations set up on your account, you will not be able to set up or access Square Online Checkout links.

Send your customers an item checkout link through an email or Square Marketing campaign, or allow your customers to purchase items whenever they want by hosting on social media or your blog. There’s no monthly fee for using Square Online Checkout links. You’ll only pay Square’s standard processing fee of 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction when your customer places an order.

Get Started

To start selling with item checkout links:

  1. Head to Items on your online Square Dashboard.
  2. Click Settings > Checkout Link.
  3. Next, select Enable Online Sales.
  4. Choose to charge a Shipping Fee and applicable Sales Tax for online sales.
  5. Once you’re all set, click Save.

Keep in mind: Shipping fees and sales tax for Square Online Checkout links will apply across all items sold online. However, Checkout Link settings will not apply to in-app sales. To create and manage tax settings for offline sales, head to the Tax tab of your online Square Dashboard.

Square Online Checkout links are only available for domestic sales. If you’d like to sell online internationally, or create a fully customizable eCommerce website, take a look at the Square Online Store, powered by Weebly.

Once you enable checkout links, you’re ready to start selling your items online.

  1. Head to your Item Library.
  2. You’ll see a new column with a chain link:

If the chain link is highlighted in blue, you can click to copy the URL to your clipboard. If the link is grey, you can try to enable manually, but the item may be unsupported. For example, you will not be able to sell variably priced items via checkout links.

To view the checkout link for a particular item:

  1. Head to your Item Library and click on an item to bring up the details page.
  2. Scroll to the bottom. Under Checkout Link, you’ll see the Online checkout link.

Keep in mind: If you are not the account owner, you will not be able to enable Square Online Checkout links. Once the account owner enables, employees with Square Dashboard access can view and copy checkout links.

Once you have the item checkout link, you’re ready to start selling online. Sell items by adding an item checkout link in an email, your social media page, blog, or send out a customizable Square Marketing campaign to a targeted customer group.

When a customer clicks the item link, they’ll be directed to a single page showcasing available item variations, as well as the product photo associated in your Item Library.

Keep in mind: Purchases made with checkout links will not issue your customized receipts with Square at this time.

You can also promote your items by reaching your customers with a Square Marketing campaign.

To include a Square Checkout Link in your campaign:

  1. Head to your Item Library and click on an item to bring up the details page.
  2. Scroll to the bottom. Under Checkout Link, you’ll see the Online checkout link listed. Click Copy Link.
  3. Next, create your campaign by heading to the Marketing tab of your online Square Dashboard. Depending on the campaign type, you can paste the item checkout link directly in the body text.
  4. Once you send out your marketing campaign, customers can click on the checkout link to purchase items on the spot.

Note: At this time, you will not be able to track click-through rate for item checkout links.

You can view completed transactions from your online Square Dashboard reports when you filter by Source > Checkout Links.

You can disable a checkout link for an item at any time. Just keep in mind, if you’ve previously shared the link with your customers, once you disable they will no longer be able to purchase the item.

To get started:

  1. Head to your Item Library and select an item.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the item details page and toggle off Available for Online Purchase.
