Square Payments
Whether you’re selling in person, online, or on the go, Square can help you process nearly any kind of payment, any way you want.
We put together a Square payments fees overview to help educate sellers on Square processing fees along with a list of corresponding FAQ about processing payments with Square.
Square Fees and Accepted Cards
2.65% for swiped, contactless and prepaid Gift Card payments, 2.9% + 30¢ per paid Square Invoice and 3.4% + 15¢ for manually entered payments and 2.9% + 30¢ for Square Online sales. Read more about Square processing fees. Interac debit cards are processed at 0.75% + 7¢ per tap and have no other associated fees.
Note: Processing fees are deducted before each transfer and cannot be charged on a monthly basis. You can view your total fees on a monthly basis from your online Square Dashboard. Learn more about how processing fees and rates are calculated.
You’re able to view and download your sales summaries and fees from the Sales section of your online Square Dashboard. To see the fees on individual transactions, select the Transaction tab within Sales and choose the transaction in question.
If you are subscribed to any Square services, you can view your subscription fees right on your Square Dashboard, select your Account & Settings > Pricing & Subscriptions.
We accept credit Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover and UnionPay brands. While we can only accept Interac debit cards in person, your customers can pay for orders through your Square Online site and Square Invoices with Visa co-branded Interac debit cards.
If you’ve referred, or have been referred by another business to use Square, you’ll see fee reimbursements reflected in your transfer summaries and in the Transactions tab on your online Square Dashboard or from the POS app.
To view the Transfer Report:
- Visit Banking > Balance > Transfer Reports in your online Square Dashboard > select a transfer.
- You’ll see fees reimbursed in the Free Processing row of the transfer summary.
To view in the Transactions tab:
- Visit the Transactions tab on your online Square Dashboard or from the POS app.
- You’ll see the total fees reflected in the summary section.
Note: If you are using a mobile device to view the Transactions tab, use landscape orientation or view on desktop for best results.
You can also see how many free processing credits you have left under the Get Free Processing section of your Square Dashboard.

Payment Questions
Yes. If the credit card isn’t present or you’re unable to swipe it, the option to manually key in credit card payments without Square Reader is available. Other available options are sending your customer a Square Invoice and processing the payment using Virtual Terminal.
You are not able to manually process Interac debit payments.

Yes. Refunds processed through Square on a mobile device must be requested and completed within 120 days of the original transaction. Payments refunded via your online Square Dashboard can be refunded within one year of the original transaction date.

Note: Any payment processed with an Interac debit card must be refunded in person through the Square Point of Sale app with the original purchasing card present.

- Processing a chip card or a contactless payment using the Square Reader
- Accepting the payment using a Square Stand
- Accepting the payment using Square Register
- Accepting the payment using Square Terminal
- Send a Square Invoice from your computer or the Square Invoices app
- Accepting Tap to Pay on iPhone transactions
- Accepting Tap to Pay on Android transactions
By default, your sales are transferred within 1–2 business days according to our standard transfer schedule.

While you aren’t able to delete any transactions that have been processed through Square, you can process a refund on any payment to keep your books in order.
Yes. If your Internet connection becomes interrupted or temporarily unavailable, enable Offline payments to accept credit card payments. The Square app securely stores the credit card details for 24 hours until the device is reconnected to the Internet.
Note: Interac debit cards do not work offline. Any offline payment attempted with an Interac debit card will auto-decline upon regaining connectivity.
Incomplete payments may temporarily show on your customer’s credit card statement, but they’re not actual charges.
If your account is activated in Canada, you may process payments in Canada and funds will be transferred in CAD.
The ability to key in card information to process payments in your online dashboard (from a laptop or desktop computer) is available through your Virtual Terminal.
In addition to Virtual Terminal:
- You can sell online by setting up a free Square Online site.
- If you don’t need an online store or website, you can send a Square Invoice, or try one of our partners from the Apps tab of your Square Dashboard, all of which help you accept payments online.
