Get Started with Subscriptions in Dashboard

Keep track of all your recurring subscription plans and subscribers from your online Square Dashboard. With Subscriptions, you can create and manage plans and add new customers to subscriptions all in one place.

It's free to set up plans and subscriptions. You'll pay 2.2% processing fee per recurring subscription payment. 

Create a plan  

  1. Go to Payments > Subscriptions > Plans from your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Click Create plan.

  3. Enter a name and price for your plan.

  4. Select how frequently you will charge your subscribers — weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, twice a year or yearly.

  5. If your plan will end, set an endpoint after a certain number of billing cycles. If you want your plan to be continuous, set it to Never.

  6. If you want to include a free trial in your plan, toggle on Free trial and set your free trial period.

  7. You can allow customers to subscribe to the plan via an online checkout link. Toggle on Checkout link to create a checkout link you can share with your customers through email, social media, SMS, or your website.

  8. If you want to allow yourself or customers to pause subscriptions, toggle on Pause subscriptions. Set a pause duration limit. Choose No limit or By billing cycle.

    • Note: Customers will only be able to pause during paid phases of their subscription. Pausing during a free trial will not be possible.

  9. Click Save.

Your new plan will now show up under Plans in the Subscriptions section of your online Square Dashboard. If you toggled on "Checkout link," select the link icon to copy the online subscription link you can send to your customers.

Manage plans

From your Plans page, you can take several actions by clicking ••• next to the plan. You can edit a plan, create a subscription, duplicate a plan or deactivate a plan. If you've enabled Checkout Links for your plans, you can also share the checkout link with your customers to make it even easier for them to subscribe or deactivate the link.

Create a subscription

You can add an existing customer to a subscription plan or create a new customer to add to the plan. Once you create a plan, you can start adding customers to plans as subscribers.

To create a subscription:

  1. Go to Payments > Subscriptions > Subscriptions from your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Click Create subscription.

  3. Choose an existing customer or create a new customer profile.

    • If you add an existing customer, their Subscriber details will automatically load.

    • If you create a new customer, enter their email address and phone number in the Subscriber details.

  4. Enter an optional internal note for your subscription. There is a 250 character limit.

  5. Click Add plan to choose your plan(s).

  6. If you want to add a sales tax to the subscription, click Add sales tax.

  7. Add the billing details by selecting a location, subscription start date, and payment method — credit or debit card, customer card on file or send invoice by email.

  8. Review all the subscription details and click Start to begin your customer's subscription.

Manage subscriptions

You can view all active, paused or cancelled subscriptions at any time from the Subscriptions tab of your Square Dashboard. You can search subscriptions by customer name for quick access.

You can take several actions by clicking ••• next to the subscription. You can pause subscription, update payment method, edit the internal note, or cancel subscription.


What is the difference between a plan and a subscription?

A plan should include your offerings. For example, if you’re a fitness centre, your plans can consist of weekly pilates access or monthly gym access. A subscription then links your customer to their desired plan and sets up an ongoing payment.

You will need to create a plan prior to creating a subscription.

How do I know if subscriptions is right for my customer?

Square sellers use plans and subscriptions for (but not limited to) recurring gym/fitness class memberships, beauty memberships, online classes, clothing memberships, subscription gift boxes, recurring donations for not-for-profit businesses, online billing for digital goods/services, and more.

We make it easier for you to collect money from your customer on a regular basis and to manage the recurring subscriptions in one centralised place.

Can my customer manage their own subscription?

Yes! Your customers can manage their subscriptions, including pausing, resuming, or canceling a subscription, by clicking the Manage Subscription link included in all subscription notification emails. They can also update their card on file.

Can I set up subscriptions and plans via the Square app?

How much is each subscription charge?

Sending a subscription or plan is free. You’ll pay 2.2% processing fee per subscription payment. Learn more about Square’s fees.
