Get Started with Subscriptions in Dashboard

Keep track of all your subscription plans and subscribers — right from your online Square Dashboard. With Subscriptions, you can:

  • Create and manage plans, such as memberships or monthly services.

  • Add new customers to subscriptions.

  • Offer a free trial period.

  • Add a checkout link to allow customers to subscribe online, anytime.

Manage Your Plans

You can create, edit, and disable subscription plans from your Square Dashboard.

Create a plan

  1. Go to Subscriptions > Plans.

  2. Click Create a plan to add your plan details.

  3. Add a name, price, and how frequently you will charge your subscribers for the plan.

  4. If your plan will end, set an endpoint, such as after a certain number of billing cycles. If you want your plan to be continuous, set it to Never.

  5. If you want to include a free trial in your plan, toggle on Free trial and set how long you want your free trial to last.

  6. You can allow customers to subscribe to the plan via a checkout link. Toggle on Checkout link to create a checkout link you can share with your customers through email, social media, SMS, or your website.

  7. Click Save to finish creating your plan.

Your new plan will now show up under Plans in the Subscriptions section of Square Dashboard. If you toggled on Checkout link, select the link icon to copy the online subscription link you can send to your customers.

Duplicate or disable a plan

To duplicate a plan

  1. Go to Subscriptions > Plans.

  2. Find the plan you want to edit, and click ••• to bring up the options.

  3. Select Duplicate plan.

  4. Review the plan details and make any changes to them, if needed.

  5. Click Save to save the duplicated plan.

To deactivate a plan

  1. Go to Subscriptions > Plans.

  2. Find the plan you want to edit, and click ••• to bring up the options.

  3. Select Deactivate plan > Deactivate plan to confirm.

Note: Existing subscriptions to a deactivated plan will not be affected and will continue to renew until cancelled.

Manage Your Subscribers

Once you create a plan, you can start adding customers to create subscriptions, including plan details and billing details. There are three billing options:

  • Credit or debit card: Manually enter the customer's card details (cardholder name, card number, expiry, and CVV).

  • Customer card on file: Use the customer's saved card on file.

  • Send invoice by email: Email the customer an invoice so they can add their own card details.

All accepted payment methods have a 2.2% processing fee per transaction. Learn more about Square’s processing fees.

Note: To accept ongoing subscription payments, you need your customer’s signed authorisation to save their card and protect you from chargeback liability. Have your customer fill out and sign this form, then store it securely in accordance with PCI-DSS and data privacy requirements.

Create a subscription

  1. Go to Subscriptions > Plans.

  2. Click ••• next to the selected plan, then click Create subscription.

  3. In the Customer field, either select an existing customer from your Customer Directory or enter a new customer name.

    • If you add an existing customer, their "Subscriber details" will automatically load.

    • If you create a new customer, enter their email and/or phone number, company name (optional), and billing address.

  4. Add an optional note under 250 characters.

  5. Add the Plan details and any relevant sales tax.

  6. Add the Billing details. Select the location, start date, and payment method for the subscription plan.

  7. Review all your subscription details and click Start to begin your customer's subscription.

Note: You can only add one plan to each subscription.

Manage or cancel a subscription

You can view your active or cancelled Subscriptions on your online Square Dashboard. Search for customers by name or sort your subscriptions by status.

To view or edit a subscription

  1. From Subscriptions, click the subscription you want to edit to open the subscription details.

  2. In the subscription details, you can edit customer details, update card on file, or add/edit notes.

To cancel a subscription

  1. From Subscriptions, click the subscription you want to cancel.

  2. Click Cancel subscription at the bottom of the Subscription Detail view.

  3. To confirm the cancellation, click Cancel subscription. Customers will receive an email notifying them of the cancellation.

Customers can unsubscribe from an active subscription via the original subscription email. To do so:

  1. Open the email, then click Manage.

  2. Click Cancel Subscription > Confirm Unsubscribe.
