About deactivating your Square account
At Square, we only charge per transaction, so there’s no cost to keep your account open if you’re a seasonal business, using our subscription products, or switching to a new processor.
Keep your account open for free and keep access to:
Your sales history and other reports with Square
Any tax forms Square has or may issue for your account
Your Customer Directory
Business tools like invoicing, Square Email Marketing or team management tools
There is no cost associated with keeping your Square account open, however, if you wish to deactivate your Square account, you can do so from your Square Dashboard.
Before you begin
Before you deactivate your account, export any necessary data prior, like your payment history, Item Library, and Customer Directory. We also recommend you download any GST invoices issued to your account.
Once deactivated, you will not be able to reactivate your existing account. You will need to create a new Square account should you decide to begin using Square again.
Deactivate your business
When you’re ready to deactivate your Square account:
Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Account & Settings > My business > About.
Click Deactivate your business.
Select your reason for deactivation, add any optional comments, and select Continue.

Enter your account password and select Confirm.
If you have 2-Step Verification enabled on your account, you’ll receive your verification code via text or use your authenticator app.
If you do not have 2-Step Verification on your account, your verification code is emailed to the email address associated with your Square account.
