About checking gift cards balance
Checking a gift card balance ensures customers have accurate and up-to-date information about their gift card balances, which enhances their overall experience with your business. Promptly checking balances encourages customers to redeem their gift cards, benefiting both the customer and your business by driving sales.
Before you begin
You have two options for checking gift card balances:
Square Dashboard
Square POS apps
You can also enable your customers to check their own gift card balance online by providing a link on your website. This link is generated from Square Dashboard.
To reload a gift card, you will need the 16-digit gift card number, or access to the QR or barcode from the gift card.
Checking gift card balances via QR code or a barcode scanner is only available on iOS devices at this time.
Search for a gift card
Sign in to Square Dashboard, then click Payments > Gift Cards.
In the Overview page, click the filter icon.
Apply filters for the gift card data you wish to view, like the gift card number, and click Show.
Check or clear a gift card balance
- Sign in to Square Dashboard, then click Reporting > Transactions.
- Search for the gift card sale by:
- Search using the last four digits of the gift card.
- Search the receipt number from the gift card’s purchase.
- Once you’ve located the transaction, select it and click the gift card number in the transaction details.
- Click Clear Balance.
- To confirm this request, enter the current gift card’s remaining balance.
- Click Clear.
- From the checkout screen, tap Library > Gift Cards or scan the gift card barcode with a barcode scanner.
- Swipe the gift card, take a photo of the gift card QR code with your device’s camera, or manually enter the 16-digit gift card number.
- The gift card balance will display next to the last four digits of the gift card number.
- You can then leave the screen or load an additional amount on this gift card, or tap Clear Balance to remove the remaining balance from the gift card.
Enable customers to check gift card balance
You can find a link in Square Dashboard and add it to your website. From there, customers can scan the QR code found on the back of their gift card or manually enter their 16-digit gift card number and four-digit PIN.
Customers can also check their balance directly by scanning the QR code printed on the back of their gift card with their smartphone camera.
If a customer's gift card does not have a 4-digit PIN printed on the back, they can select My gift card does not have a PIN to continue checking their balance.
If a customer's gift card has a 4-digit PIN but the check balance feature does not work, they will receive a message to contact the Square seller to check their balance.
Alternatively, customers can check gift card balances and manage all of their gift cards from their Square profile.
