Accept Payments with Square Terminal
Once you’ve set up your Square Terminal, you can start processing payments right away.
Taking Payments with Square Terminal
To take a payment, enter a custom amount or search for an item, add it to the cart, and tap Charge.
Tap (Apple Pay, Google Pay, contactless cards)
Ask your customer to hold a contactless device or card near the contactless symbol in the center of the screen to start the payment.
Dip (chip cards)
Insert a chip card into the chip card slot and leave it in place until the sale is complete. The front of the card with the chip on it should face up.
Swipe (magnetic stripe cards)
Swipe magnetic stripe cards through the magstripe reader on the right side of Square Terminal. The magnetic stripe must face inward.
Customizing Payment Settings
Terminal is built for versatility - you can run cards for your customer or have your customer drive the payment. You can customize your check out experience right on your Square Terminal:
Tap the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner.
Tap Settings > Customer Checkout.
Choose the best checkout option for your business.
Default to Customer Checkout is best if your customers typically tap, dip, or swipe their own cards or payment devices. This option will automatically prompt your customer to process their payments for a faster checkout.
Default to Standard Checkout is better for for business that primarily take phone orders and key in card payments or want to send invoices. This will allow you to see the payment types screen first, where you can select from a number of payment options, or launch the customer checkout flow by pressing the Customer Checkout button.
Show Itemized Cart Screen can be enabled to display an itemized view of your customers order before they process a payment.
