Use Square for Restaurants on Your Square Terminal
Use Square Terminal to streamline your guests’ dining experience by combining tableside ordering with checkout – all on one device. To access all the Square for Restaurants features on your Square Terminal, you’ll need to subscribe to Restaurants Plus Plan.
You can use Restaurants Free Plan on your Square Terminal, but you’ll only have access to Square POS features and you’ll need to toggle on Open Tickets to select tables and open bills.
Sign In to Square for Restaurants on Square Terminal
To log in to Square for Restaurants on Square Terminal:
Sign in using your email and password or using a device code. Learn how to create a device code.
Once you log in to Square Terminal, you can start taking payments.
If you are already accepting payments on Square Terminal using Square Point of Sale, sign out of the Square Point of Sale app and sign in to the Square for Restaurants app with your device code.
Update Your Terminal
To access the most recent version of Square for Restaurants mobile POS on Square Terminal, you need to update your device to the latest version:
If opening a new Square Terminal out of the box, tap the back arrow twice to get to the sign-in screen.
If already logged in to a Square Terminal, sign out of the device. Tap More, scroll down and tap Sign out, then confirm by tapping Sign Out again.
At the sign-in screen, tap Change Settings.

3. Scroll down and tap About Terminal.
4. Check your OS version number. You need to be on OS version 5.17.0058 or higher. If you are not on 5.17.0058 or higher, wait for a software update to download. This typically takes 15 minutes but can take up to 45 minutes to complete. Note: the device will say “Software Up to Date” until it has had 15 minutes to search for the update.
5. When you see that an update is “Ready to Install”, tap Install Now. If your device has less than 35% battery remaining, plug it in for the duration of the update.
6. Once the update is complete, you can log in to Square for Restaurants Plus on Square Terminal with a mobile POS device code.

Note: Square Terminal updates automatically overnight as long as it is powered on and plugged in.
