For example, if your Customer Directory contains 35,279 customers, but has only collected explicit consent to email 1,500 customers, the subscription fee is $50 per month, per Square account.

Subscribed Customers

A subscribed customer is a customer that has provided explicit consent to receive marketing emails from your business.

If you’ve collected customer email addresses through Square from (but not limited to) sending digital receipts, Invoices, Appointments or Loyalty — the customer cannot receive Square Marketing email campaigns unless:

  • You’ve separately collected and recorded the customer's explicit consent,

  • You’ve manually imported an existing database of customers who have consented to receive marketing emails from your business, or

  • Your customer has used one of Square’s customer information collection tools.

Note: Email addresses that you have previously collected through Square which are included in your Customer Directory (for example, a customer has provided you with their email to receive an invoice, book an appointment or receive loyalty rewards) cannot be used to send email marketing through Square Marketing, unless you have separately collected and recorded the customer's explicit consent or manually added that customer as a "subscribed customer" in your customer directory.

Managing Your Subscribed Customers

To manage the number of subscribed customers in your directory:

  1. Go to your Customer Directory and click Resolve Duplicates to fix any duplicate contacts that may exist.

  2. Review your directory for any old, empty or unused customer records, and delete them.
