Create a Printer Station and Connect a Printer on iOS

Printer stations allow you to send menu items or receipts to different printers at one location. Use Printer Stations to save your settings to your iOS device and easily swap between connected compatible printers.

Printer Settings

When creating a printer station on your device, you can use printers to:

Receipts

When you enable Use this printer for receipts, your printer will print bills, reports and open cash drawers. You can choose to print receipts manually or automatically.

Note: Automatically printing receipts will bypass the receipt screen and disable digital receipts. To send a digital receipt, go back into the Transactions tab.

In-person order tickets

When you enable Use printer for in-person order tickets, you can use order tickets to send orders to prep stations. Order tickets will print automatically after checkout. You can also configure the following settings:

  • Single item per ticket: This setting overrides grouping items and automatically prints each item, ungrouped, on its own ticket.
  • Combine identical items: Items with the same details will be automatically combined to form one line item.
  • Print kitchen names: Items, variations or modifiers printed from this station will print with their kitchen names. Kitchen names can be set up on your online Square Dashboard.
  • Compact tickets: This setting removes the margin at the top of the ticket to reduce printer paper usage.
  • Categories to print: Order tickets include all items. You can create categories to specify which items to print on the order ticket.

Online order tickets

When you enable Use this printer for online order tickets, you can use online order tickets to send online orders to prep stations. You can also configure the following settings:

  • Single item per ticket: This setting overrides grouping items and automatically prints each item, ungrouped, on its own ticket.
  • Print kitchen names: Items, variations or modifiers printed from this station will print with their kitchen names. Kitchen names can be set up on your online Square Dashboard.

  • Automatically print new orders: Online orders will automatically printe when it’s time to make them.
  • Categories to print: Order tickets include all items. You can create categories to specify which items to print on the order ticket.

Order ticket stubs

When you enable Use this printer for order ticket stubs, you can give stubs to customers for their order. Note: Order ticket stubs only print after an in-person order ticket is printed.

Void tickets

When you enable Use this printer for void tickets, you can print out any dockets to physically record voided transactions.

Ethernet Printer

  1. Locate your wireless router with an Ethernet port and make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi signal.

  2. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the rear panel of the printer, and plug the other end of the cable into the wireless router’s Ethernet port.

  3. From the Square app, tap More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.

  4. Tap Settings > Hardware > Printers > Create Printer Station.

  5. Enter a printer station name.

  6. Select Printer and select your printer.

  7. Make sure the receipt printer and your device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. To test your connection, tap Print Test.

    • For iOS devices, Square needs access to your local network in order to connect to network printers.

    • Toggle on Local Network in your iOS device Settings > Square > Local Network to enable access, then relaunch the Square app.

  8. Under the section Use this printer for, toggle on whether you’d like to print: Receipts, In-person order tickets, Online order tickets, Order ticket stubs or Void tickets.

  9. Tap Save.

To connect multiple devices to the same Ethernet printer, follow these steps with each iOS device. You can also print copies of the same receipt to multiple printers from one device.

Note: Your printer must have an Ethernet interface. You can order swappable interfaces but be sure to request the Ethernet connection type on your printer.

Wi-Fi Printer

  1. Ensure that your device is connected to your Wi-Fi network.

  2. From the Square app, tap More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.

  3. Tap Settings > Hardware > Printers > Create Printer Station.

  4. Enter a printer station name.

  5. Tap Printer and select your printer.

  6. Make sure the receipt printer and your device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. To test your connection, tap Print Test.

  7. Under the section Use this printer for, toggle on whether you’d like to print: Receipts, In-person order tickets, Online order tickets, Order ticket stubs or Void tickets.

  8. Tap Save.

Note: For iOS devices, Square needs access to your local network in order to connect to network printers. Toggle ON for Local Network in your device Settings > Square > Local Network to enable access, then relaunch the Square app.

USB Printer for Square Stand

  1. Plug your supported USB receipt printer into a power source.

  2. Plug the USB cable from your printer into the USB hardware hub.

  3. From the Square Point of Sale app, tap More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.

  4. Tap Settings > Hardware > Printers > Create Printer Station.

  5. Enter a printer station name.

  6. Tap Printer and select your USB printer. To test your printer connection, tap Print Test.

  7. Under the section Use this printer for, toggle on whether you’d like to print: Receipts, In-person order tickets, Online order tickets, Order ticket stubs or Void tickets.

  8. Tap Save.

AirPrint Support on iOS

AirPrint support on iOS helps the integration with any printer that supports AirPrint protocol. The most popular kitchen and receipt printers that support AirPrint are include StarTSP654II, Brother QL-1110and StarTSP847II.

To get started from the Square POS app:

  1. Tap More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.

  2. Tap Settings > Hardware > Printers > Create Printer Station.

  3. Enter a printer station name.

  4. Tap Printer then select the printer.

  5. Tap Connect AirPrint printer and choose your printer.

  6. Tap Save.

You are able to find your AirPrint printer saved, enabled and ready to be used from your Square app under Settings > Hardware.
