Appeal a compliance deactivation of your Square account

Who is this article for?
Square sellers whose accounts have been deactivated for compliance reasons and who are eligible to submit a self-service appeal.

About compliance deactivation appeals

If your Square account has been deactivated due to a compliance review, you may be eligible to appeal the decision. Eligible sellers can submit an appeal directly through your Square Dashboard — no need to contact Support.

When you submit an appeal, the Square Compliance team reviews your information and makes a decision. You’ll receive an email with the outcome.

Note: This process is for compliance-related deactivations only. If your account was deactivated for a different reason (such as a Terms of Service violation), contact Square Support directly.

Before you begin

  • You must have received a deactivation notice from Square indicating a compliance-related reason.

  • You need access to the email address associated with your Square account (to receive the appeal link and decision notification).

  • Have information about your business ready — the appeal form may ask about your products, services, and business practices.

How to submit a compliance deactivation appeal

  1. Check your email for the deactivation notice from Square. The email includes a link to start your appeal.

  2. Sign in to your Square Dashboard.

  3. Click the link in the notification banner or your email.

  4. Complete the appeal form — provide accurate information about your business, including:

    • A description of your products or services

    • Any relevant documentation that supports your appeal

    • An explanation of how you’ve addressed the compliance concern (if applicable)

  5. Review your submission and select Submit Appeal.

After submitting, you’ll receive a confirmation email. The Compliance team typically reviews appeals within 5–10 business days.

After you submit

  • Appeal approved: You’ll receive an email confirming your account has been reactivated. You can resume processing payments immediately.

  • Appeal denied: You’ll receive an email explaining the decision. The deactivation remains in effect.

  • More information needed: You may receive a follow-up email requesting additional documentation. Respond promptly to avoid delays in the review process.
