Square Checking Application Review FAQ

To complete your Square Checking account request, Square may request personal or business information to verify you or your business. If your personal or business information cannot be verified or if additional information about you or your business is needed, we’ll reach out to you via your online Square Dashboard and via email to request more information.

How to Upload Documents

You can upload any requested documents from your mobile device or desktop computer via the link within your email, your online Square Dashboard, or in your Square Point-of-Sale app. If you are having trouble with your desktop experience, learn more about Square Dashboard Troubleshooting.

Square Dashboard

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, click Notifications or the Notifications Icon.

  2. Click Complete Your Square Checking Application > Continue, then click Upload the requested items.

  3. Upload any requested items to start the review process.

Square POS app

  1. From the navigation bar, tap More > Settings, then tap Information Requests.

  2. In Active requests, you’ll see a request related to your Square Checking account application.

  3. Tap the request to upload any requested items to start the review process.

What Documents are Considered Acceptable?

Personal information

If we are unable to verify your legal name, personal address, Social Security number and/or date of birth, we may request any of the following documents:

Name

A government-issued ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport)

Personal Address

Utility bill, bank statement, driver’s license, lease agreement. 

Social Security Number

SSN Card, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) letter from the IRS, 1040 tax return

Date of Birth

A government-issued ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport, birth certificate)

Note: We need to see the entire statement or document to complete your review. If a partial copy is submitted, we may request to see the document in full.

Business information

A Beneficial Owner is someone who directly or indirectly owns 25% or more of the business applying for the Square Checking account. If you’re not a beneficial owner, you’re required to submit additional identifying information on behalf of the beneficial owner. We won’t contact any listed beneficial owner or ask them to review your request for a Square Checking account.

If we are unable to verify the information provided for any of the listed beneficial owners, we may request one or more of the following documents: 

Your business’s government issued SS-4 (EIN confirmation letter)

Your most recent business tax returns confirming your business name and TIN

Secretary of State documents that contain your business TIN 

If you misplaced your SS-4 confirmation letter, you can call the IRS at 800-829-4933 to reach their Business and Specialty Tax Line. You can also visit the IRS online for additional help.

FAQ

Why do I need to submit additional information?

When you apply for Square Checking, certain information relating to your identity and/or business will need to be verified. This means that we may require supplemental information to proceed with your application for a Square Checking account.

What if I don’t have all the requested information?

Your Square Checking account application will not be reviewed if the request is incomplete. Complete the request in full with all informatiom requested. If the submitted information isn’t sufficient, we will contact via email and your online Square Dashboard for any next steps.

How long do I have to complete the information request?

You will have 14 days from the date of your submission to complete the information request. If you do not provide all of the requested information on time, your application will be canceled.

Why haven’t I received a decision after three business days?

You will be notified of your application status within one to three business days. If you don’t receive a decision within this timeframe, it may be because we still need additional information from you. Be sure to check your online Square Dashboard and email inbox for any notifications asking you to provide additional information.

How do I locate my EIN?

If you misplaced your EIN, you can call the IRS at 800-829-4933 to reach their Business and Specialty Tax Line. You can also
visit the IRS online for additional help.

What can I provide if I don’t have my SS-4?

You can submit a copy of your recent business tax return, such as last year’s return. in place of your SS-4. If you do not have an SS-4 or a business tax return, we may be able to accept a Secretary of State document that contains your business TIN.
