Square Payments

Whether you’re selling in person, online, or on the go, Square can help you process nearly any kind of payment, any way you want.

Read about all of the types of cards you can accept when you use Square.

Square works with any Canadian-issued and most non-Canadian issued credit cards with a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Discover or UnionPay International logo, as well as Interac Debit cards. Square processes all accepted credit cards with the same standard rates.

Using the Square Contactless and Chip Reader or Square Terminal, you can accept Interac chip and PIN transactions for any amount and Interac Flash transactions (e.g., tap debit) up to $250.

Square Invoices, Virtual Terminal and purchases made through Square Online and our API can be paid with Visa or MasterCard co-branded debit cards in addition to credit cards (but these will be processed at credit card rates).

Accept Interac® Debit Cards

To process Interac Debit cards, you will need to use the contactless and chip reader or Square Terminal as these cards can only be processed by tap or insert. You will not be able to swipe or manually key in Interac Debit cards.

Interac Debit cards are processed at 0.75% + $0.07 per tap or insert, and have no other associated fees. Currently, Interac tap payments have a $250 transaction limit. Interac insert (chip and PIN) payments have no transaction limit.

Accept Prepaid Cards

Square can process prepaid cards bearing any of the logos above at our low 2.65% per-swipe rate or 3.4% + 15¢ manual-entry rate. Any remaining balance will display on the receipt.

Accept International Cards

Square can process most internationally-issued cards bearing any of the logos above. Keep the following tips in mind when processing international cards:

  • If you experience issues processing an internationally-issued card, have the cardholder contact their issuer.

  • Cardholders may be charged for currency conversion by their card issuer since payments must be processed in your country’s official currency.

  • You must be located in the country where you activated your Square account to process payments.
