Square Online Product Images

Product images are a key element of a successful ecommerce website. Customers can’t physically interact with items in your online store, so having a good visual reference can mean the difference between an abandoned cart and a completed purchase.

Note: If your items already have images assigned in your Square Item Library, they'll sync automatically to Square Online (and vice versa).

Add Product Images

Images of your products are often a customer's first exposure to what you sell online, so it's very important to be strategic with them before uploading them to your website. To add product images to your items in Square Online:

  1. From your Square Online Overview page, go to Items > Site Items.

  2. Select an item from your list or add a new item by selecting Create new item.

  3. Under Media, add images to your item.

  4. Complete all other edits to your item and select Save when finished.

Use the method above to add still images, gifs, and 360 spin animations. If your site is already published, your photos will automatically show up on the live item page when you save your changes. Customers can select an image to zoom in, and if you’ve added more than one, they can use the thumbnails to switch views.

Supported Image File Types

We support the following file types for product images in Square Online:

  • .jpg

  • .png

  • .gif

  • .spin

Note: Individual file size can be up to 25 MB.

FAQ

Do I need a professional camera, or can I use my mobile device to take photos of my item?

You can use your mobile device. Most modern phones and tablets are equipped with a camera that can take very good photos, but image quality is dependent on your device. To help you create better-looking product images, check out the Square Photo Studio app.

What size do my photos need to be?

A good rule of thumb is to use an image with a 1:1 aspect ratio that’s at least 2,000 x 2,000 pixels large. Anything lower than 2,000 x 2,000 pixels could result in blurry images.

Can I display different photos for the same item on my Square Online site and Square Point of Sale?

Photos you assign to items and categories will display the same photos everywhere in Square, including your website and point of sale.

How can customers interact with the images on my Square Online site?

Customers will see the images on your site in the order that you assign them to each item and category. They can always select an image to zoom in, and if you’ve added more than one, they can also use the thumbnails to switch views.

Can I adjust the aspect ratio and cropping of the item images on my Square Online site?

Yes. You can adjust the image ratio and cropping for item images displayed throughout your Square Online site. To start:

  1. From your Square Online site editor, open the page with the item image you’d like to adjust.
  2. Select the item image on your site, which can be one found on a featured items section, an item page, or your ordering page.
  3. In the editing panel, select Item images or Image gallery.
  4. Choose an aspect ratio.
  5. Choose an image fit of either Crop or Scale. Crop fits the image to your selected ratio but crops out any excess. Scale makes the entire image fit into your selected ratio but leaves blank spaces on the sides.
  6. Publish your site to see the changes live.
