What Is an SRM?
SRM stands for “sales recording module” (aka a module d’enregistrement des ventes or MEV), and it records every sale made and generates a unique barcode on each receipt to ensure accuracy and retention of business records. The “black box” system works in conjunction with an SRS (sales recording system), point-of-sale system and a compatible receipt printer.
This mandatory billing system must be used by qualifying restaurant establishments, including full-service restaurants, catering services, bars and food trucks that do business in Quebec. Below is information to learn more about why you need to use an SRM.
What Is a WEB-SRM?
While SRM is the physical sales recording module, WEB-SRM is the new cloud-based IT solution. WEB-SRM is required for all qualifying restaurant establishments located in Quebec.
- New businesses registered after November 1, 2023, will be required to use WEB-SRM immediately.
- Established businesses will have until May 31, 2025, to switch from a physical SRM to WEB-SRM.
Why Do You Need an SRM?
Due to Quebec tax requirements, if you operate a qualifying “Restaurant Establishment” (restaurant, bar or reception hall) in Quebec, you are subject to mandatory billing requirements (i.e. preparing receipts that contain specific information for customers). Further, if you operate a Restaurant Establishment and are a Quebec Sales Tax (QST) registrant, you may be required to use a sales recording module (SRM) to produce a specific form of receipt and send Revenu Québec a monthly report.
You can review the mandatory billing requirements and how to comply with the tax requirements applicable to your business on the Revenu Québec website.
