The global payments technology company opens Melbourne office to support rapid growth

MELBOURNE, 21 May 2015 — Square, the California-based technology company started by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, today announced the launch of their headquarters in Melbourne, Australia. This will be the fourth country where Square has opened an office, following Japan, Canada and the United States, and follows strong demand from Australian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) who have adopted the free Square Point of Sale app since its global release in November 2014.

The Australian headquarters based in Melbourne’s CBD is led by Country Manager Ben Pfisterer, who brings extensive experience within the innovation sector in Australia, combined with a background in banking and business. Prior to joining Square, Ben worked for organisations such as NAB and VISA heading up Innovation & Emerging Products (AUS / NZ) working across the development of products such as Visa payWave and Mobile Payments.

Ben Pfisterer said: “We are thrilled to open our local office in Australia, which continues to grow as a country renowned for a strong and diverse entrepreneurial small business community.

Leveraging our knowledge of the local market, and the growth of Square around the world, we are looking forward to deploying an exciting product roadmap in the future that will help to make commerce easier for Australian small business owners.”

While rolling out Square’s services to merchants across the country, the local team is focused on supporting Australian SMB owners and entrepreneurs to get the most from Square Point of Sale and to help them start, run and grow their business. Square has witnessed a strong appetite from Australian merchants for Square Point of Sale, the free point of sale app compatible with iOS and Android tablets and smartphones, from a variety of SMBs across Australia including cafes and restaurants, bars and clubs, retail stores, hair and beauty businesses, florists, market traders and many more.

Melbourne has been chosen as the home of Square’s Australian headquarters due to its thriving small business community of merchants who are already benefiting from Square, as well as having a growing reputation as Australia’s technology hub.
