Add and Manage Devices Remotely

With device management in Square Dashboard, you can set up, monitor, and manage all your Square Point of Sale and Square Retail POS app devices in one place. You can create device profiles, printer profiles, and device codes. Learn more about creating and managing device profiles in our Support Center.

You'll need to update your Square app and device software to the latest version to avoid any issues on the devices you have linked to profiles.

Note: Currently, only Square Point of Sale and Retail POS devices can be managed with remote device management. Sellers using the Square Restaurants POS app will have different device management features and can manage devices in through Settings > Device Management > Points of sale > POS Devices. Pricing

Square Remote Device Management is in beta and is rolling out gradually to all Square customers for free trial testing. You will be able to access remote device management in your Square Dashboard, through Settings > Device Management. Here you’ll find the device hub, which shows you all of your devices. You’ll be able to create Device Profiles and monitor all your devices by selecting one of the tabs in the left-hand panel. Once the beta is over, you will need to pay a fee to continue to access the feature.

Add Devices

Devices lists all of your previously signed in devices (like points of sale, phones, Square hardware) across all locations from your Square Dashboard. You can view specific information like locations, connectivity, applications used, and more. You can also create device codes to add new devices.

Add devices

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Devices.
  2. Click Add Device.
  3. Select the location where this device will be used and click Next, if applicable.
  4. Select the device profile and click Next, or click Not now to skip this step and add a device profile later.
  5. Enter the device code name and click Create.
  6. Follow the steps to sign in on your device using the device code listed.
  7. Click Copy to copy your device code. Click Send to share your device code via email or phone number.
  8. Click Done.

View, search, and filter devices

You can view all your devices in your Square Dashboard by clicking Settings > Device Management > Devices. Your device periodically syncs with Square to apply any updates you make.

To verify your device is managed remotely:

  1. Open your point of sale app and tap ≡ More > Settings > Checkout or Security.
  2. You’ll see a banner showing the assigned profile.

To search for a specific device:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Devices.
  2. Enter the device name in the search field.
  3. Click a device to view additional information.

You can filter your devices by status, location, device type, installed apps, or profile. To do so:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Devices.
  2. Click Status, Location, Device type, Installed apps, or Profile.
  3. Check the box next to each option you want to filter by.
  4. Click a device to view additional information.

Create and Manage Device Codes

With device codes, you can sign in to Square devices and apps using a code instead of an email address and password.

Create a device code

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Device codes.
  2. Click Create and specify the kind of device you’re adding.
  3. Select which application this device will use.
  4. Select the location where this device is used and click Next, if applicable.
  5. Enter the device code name and click Create. If applicable, set an owner passcode and click Next.
  6. Follow the steps to sign in on your device using the device code listed.
  7. Click Copy to copy your device code. Click Send to share your device code via email or phone number.
  8. Click Done.

Reset and edit device codes

You can reset your device codes to generate new device codes on paired and unpaired devices. A paired device is a device that uses a device code to sign in to your Square account. An unpaired device is a device that has not used a device code to sign in to your Square account.

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Device codes.
  2. Select an existing device and click Reset.
  3. Click Continue.

To edit a device code:

  1. Sign in to your [Square Dashboard] and click Settings > Device Management > Device codes.
  2. Select an existing device and click ••• > Edit.
  3. Enter a new device code name and click Save.
