Get Started with Domains for Square Online
Note: Your Square Online website must be upgraded to a paid plan in order to publish it to a custom domain name.
A domain, often known as a URL or site address, is what helps users find your website while browsing the internet. If you think of your website as a house, then a domain is the house's address.
There are numerous ways you can use a domain for your website. If you don't have a Square account, search for a domain to get started. If you already have a Square account, and have Square Online set up, learn more details below.
Choose a Great Domain Name
If you're just getting started with the world of domains and websites, your first step might be to choose a great domain name for your site. Consider the following tips when beginning your search.
Set Up and Change your Website's Domain Name
Once you have a domain, there are several ways to get your domain associated with your website. We even offer a free option. Learn more below.
ICANN and WHOIS
ICANN is the international, non-profit organization that oversees the registration of all domain names globally. According to ICANN, all domains registered on the web must have current contact information from the person, or entity, that registered that domain, which is added by default to the ICANN WHOIS database.

You can direct multiple domain names to one website with domain forwarding. If you want to use more than one, simply publish your site to one of those domain names so it becomes your primary domain, and then forward any other domain(s) to that primary domain.
To forward a domain you purchased from us, please follow the steps below:
Select the domain you want to forward.
Select Set Destination > Forward to an external URL.
Type the domain name you want to forward this domain to (which would be your primary domain).
Repeat these steps for any other domains we host that you want to forward.
If you bought the domain you want to forward to your primary domain through another registrar, you'll need to ask them for help on how to forward one domain to another.
Note: This is different from domain redirects, which help forward old page URLs to new ones.
Managing records for your domain is very important for keeping your website, as well as any email addresses based on your domain, working properly. Learn more about how to manage records for Square Online domains.
Top Level Domains (TLDs)
A TLD, or Top Level Domain (often referred to as a "domain extension"), is the last part of a domain name, which would be the .com, .org, .co, .store, .menu, .blog, etc. part of the domain. If you purchase a domain from Square, be sure to comeplete the buying process to confirm the final price of the domain, as different TLDs will have different prices.
We currently offer a wide range of TLDs for sale, but if you're unable to find a specific TLD you want, you can purchase a domain from another registrar, and connect your domain to Square Online.
Note: Some ccTLDs (country code Top Level Domains), like .com.au, can only be registered for 2 years at a time.
Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
Secure Socket Layer (simply known as SSL) encrypts the data that goes from a user's computer to your website and back, making the data exchange secure. This is especially important for online stores, where users will expect their information to be secure while transacting with you.
If your domain is hosted at Square, SSL is enabled by default for you the first time you publish your website. Occasionally, it may take up to 24-48 hours before the certificate is configured.
If you have a domain hosted by a third party, you can still have SSL on your website. Make sure your domain name is pointed to the correct IP address, and that your website is published. Learn how to connect your domain to Square Online correctly to enable SSL.
The domain service always attempts renewal approximately 45 days early to ensure that it renews successfully (before actual expiration). If the payment does not process successfully, then that would grant you plenty of buffer time to update the payment details so you avoid having your site suddenly go offline.
Note: The domain doesn't actually expire until the anniversary date of the purchase.
If you need to process a refund for a registration, transfer, or renewal, please contact our Support Team as soon as possible. We can also help you confirm if a bill you received for your domain is legitimate or not.

If you don’t see your site online for any reason, there are several troubleshooting measures you can take related to your domain:
Publish your site from the Square Online site editor by selecting the Publish button.
Be sure there are no typos in the domain you associated with your site, or in the address your entered in the browser to search for your site.
Reload your browser, and clear your cache. This is in case an unpublished version of your site is cached in the browser you're using.
Try searching for your site using a few different browsers, devices, and internet networks to pinpoint if any of these are part of the issue.
Make sure your billing information is up-to-date for the domain service, and that it isn't expired. Learn more about how to manage your Square Online subscription.
If your domain or website are hosted by a third party, be sure that the domain is connected to your website correctly. Learn how to connect your domain to Square Online if we host your site, but the domain is hosted by a third party.
If your third-party domain's DNS records include an AAAA record, our service will not recognize it and the domain will not populate your website when it's searched in a browser. To fix this issue, remove the AAAA record from your domain's DNS, and allow the changes to propogate (usually within 48 hours).
If you just purchased or transferred a domain, note that there is a 24-48 hour propagation period that must take place before your website is live at the domain name. You must wait until the DNS propagation period is complete for the website to appear when the domain name is entered and searched in a browser. Learn more about transferring your domain to Square.
These are all important troubleshooting steps you should take before you contact our Support Team.
