Create items with Square for Restaurants

Before you begin

With Square for Restaurants, you can create Items to make up your menus. A menu is a specific set of display groups and items that will appear on your POS for a certain period of the day or a certain shift.

You have three options for item creation with Square for Restaurants:

  • From your menu editor in Square Dashboard

  • From the Square Restaurants POS app on an iOS tablet

  • From Square Restaurants POS on Square Register or Square Terminal

You can also create items from your Item Library, but you need to add them to a menu manually. Learn more about creating an item from your Item Library.

To create an item with Square for Restaurants, you will need access to your Square Dashboard, the Square Restaurants POS app on an iOS tablet, Square Register or Square Terminal. To create items and add them to a menu, you must have at least one existing menu. If you haven’t created a menu yet, learn how to create a menu.

Create an item

From your menus, you can create multiple items at once.

  1. Log in to your Square Dashboard and click Items & orders > Menus.
  2. Select a menu from the Menu options.
  3. Click Add Item and begin typing the name of the item you want to create. Then click Add a New Item. You can also select Add Multiple Items to add multiple items to a menu.
  4. Enter an Item Name, Kitchen Facing Name, Price, and Category (if applicable).
  5. For Show In, select the display group where the item will appear on your Restaurants POS app.
  6. If you want the item automatically added to a bill when selected, toggle on Automatically Add Item to Bill.
  7. Click Save.

  1. Open your Restaurants POS app and tap Account > Items > All Items.
  2. Tap Create Item.
  3. Enter the Name and select a Category, if applicable.
  4. Under Price and inventory, enter the SKU, Unit, Price, and Stock on hand.
  5. Select Modifier sets for the item, if applicable.
  6. Add a Description.
  7. Tap Save.

  1. Tap Utilities > Items > All Items.
  2. Tap Create Item.
  3. Enter the Name and select a Category, if applicable.
  4. Under Price and inventory, enter the SKU, Unit, Price, and Stock on hand.
  5. Select Modifier sets for the item, if applicable.
  6. Add a Description.
  7. Tap Save.
