How to Accept Payments on Mobile

With Square Reader

Get set up

Watch this five minute YouTube video on how to pair your Square Reader to your compatible device and take your first payment.

Before you get started, make sure you’ve downloaded the Square Point of Sale app on your phone.

  1. Open the Square Point of Sale app and sign in using the same email and password when you set up your Square account.

  2. You can connect your compatible device to your Square Reader via Bluetooth.

Set the amount

Navigate to Checkout and enter the amount to be charged from the Keypad or select specific items from your Library. If you haven’t yet, learn more about building your item library.

Complete the sale

  1. Tap Review Sale > Charge.

  2. Tap, insert, or swipe the payment method.

  3. Your customer can then enter their PIN, add a tip, and choose to receive an email or text message receipt.

Note: You can also accept contactless options such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay by tapping the mobile wallet onto the Square Reader.

Without Square Reader

Manually Entered Payments

Before you get started, make sure you’ve downloaded the Square Point of Sale app on your phone.

  1. Enter the custom amount to be charged or select specific items from your item library.

  2. Confirm the total amount and tap Charge.

  3. Tap Manual Credit Card Entry.

  4. Enter the card information, including the expiry date and CVV and tap Charge.

Complete the sale

On the confirmation page, your customer can add a tip, sign to authorise the transaction and choose to receive an email or text message receipt. If your customer isn’t present, simply tap Done. You can text or email a receipt to your customer on the next screen or tap Add Customer to save their details to your Customer Directory.

Note: When you manually enter a card number, the fee is 2.2% per transaction instead of the standard 1.9% per insert, tap, or swipe payment on Square Reader and Square Stand or 1.6% on Square Terminal or Square Register. Learn more about Square’s Pricing.

Invoice

Send via Square Point of Sale app

  1. Download the Square Point of Sale (POS) app on your compatible phone or tablet.
  2. Open the POS app and log in.
  3. Tap More > Invoice.
  4. Tap Create Invoice.
  5. Fill out all of the invoice details, including the customer, the amounts, any applicable discounts, and when the invoice is due.
  6. Tap Continue.
  7. Once the information is complete, tap Send. Your customer receives an emailed invoice and you get a copy in your inbox.

Send via Square Invoices app

  1. Download the Square Invoices app on your compatible phone or tablet.
  2. Open the Invoices app and log in.
  3. Tap the blue ”+” button and tap Invoice.
  4. Fill out all of the invoice details, including the customer, the amount, any applicable discounts, a custom message (optional) and when the invoice is due.
  5. Tap Continue.
  6. Once the information is complete, tap Send. Your customer receives an emailed invoice and you get a copy in your inbox.

Track invoice payment

Once your invoice is sent, you can track whether it has been paid from your Dashboard.
