Connect Barcode Scanners to Square Point of Sale

Learn how to connect and troubleshoot supported barcode scanners with the Square Point of Sale app or Square Register.

Supported Barcode Scanners

Barcode scanners are supported on iPads through Square Stand, Square Register or selected Android devices with USB. If you are using an Android, your device must be running Android 5.0 software and support USB OTG (On-The-Go) or host mode. You’ll need a micro USB to USB adaptor to connect the scanner to your device.

  • POS-Mate Wireless (Bluetooth)

Bluetooth barcode scanners are currently only compatible with iPads and iPhones.

Connect Your Barcode Scanner

Bluetooth Scanners

To connect a Socket Bluetooth scanner to your iPad or iPhone:

  1. Turn on Bluetooth from your iOS settings.

  2. Tap the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner to navigate to the menu.

  3. Tap Settings > Hardware > Barcode Scanner > Connect Barcode Scanner.

  4. Turn on the bar code scanner by holding the power button (small button) on the scanner until you hear two beeps (low to high).

  5. Scan the bar code below, or the bar code displayed on your Square Point of Sale screen, by holding the trigger button (large button) until you hear three beeps (low to high).

  6. After you’ve successfully scanned the above barcode, tap Next on the dialog screen.

  7. Return to the Bluetooth settings on your iOS device, and select the Socket scanner from available devices there.

  8. Navigate back to the Square app, and observe the on-the-screen prompts to complete the pairing flow.

To connect your POS-Mate Bluetooth scanner to your iOS device:

  1. Turn on Bluetooth from your iOS settings.

  2. Tap the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner to navigate to the menu or the down arrow at the top of the Square Register.

  3. Tap Settings > Hardware > Barcode Scanner > Connect Bluetooth Scanner.

  4. Turn on the barcode scanner by holding the trigger button (on the handle) of the scanner until you hear two beeps (low to high).

  5. Follow the prompts on your Square Point of Sale screen, and scan the first barcode, and go to the next page to scan the second barcode also shown below. Barcodes must be scanned in order and you must be on the Connect Barcode Scanner screen in your Square app.

  1. In Point of Sale, tap Next to connect the barcode scanner with your iOS device.

  2. Wait for the scanner to pair. If nothing happens or you get an error, go back and scan both barcodes again.

  3. When the scanner pairing is successful, you will see Scanner Connected.

USB Barcode Scanners

To get set up:

  1. Open the Square app on your device.

  2. Plug your USB barcode scanner into the Accessory Hub of your Square Hardware or into your Android device using an on-the-go (OTG) adaptor.

  3. The app will notify you an accessory has been attached.

Unpair your Bluetooth Barcode Scanner

If you’d like to connect your barcode scanner to a different iPad or iPhone, you’ll need to unpair the scanner first. To do so:

  1. From the main menu, select Settings > Barcode scanners.

  2. Tap Forget next to the barcode scanner you wish to unpair.

  3. On the pop up select Forget a second time. Now you can link your barcode scanner to a different iOS device.
